Toxic spillers face big fines
TORONTO -- The Ontario government will slap large fines on corporations that spill toxic chemicals, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Friday.
Environment Minister Leona Dombrowsky said the penalties apply to 176 large industries that "deal with some very serious chemicals that can have a very, very serious impact when released into the environment." They include chemical plants and oil refineries in the notorious Chemical Valley, near Sarnia, where hundreds of serious spills on the St. Clair River have occurred in the past 50 years.
