I have been reading a lot about using slip bobbers for perch this fall. I am not familiar with this fishing technique; could some one please explain it for me?:bash: :help:
Had to finish the honey doo, list before I could get out so I figured I miss the perch so went for muskie instead. Cleaned weeds the whole time, fished from 3:30 til 6 pm the wind and the waves had calmed and got a nice muskie 17 lb, 47" hit a black and silver crankbait 2 oz 45' back off a board, near the channel out from 10 mile.:fish:

do you cast the slip bobber rig?
and how high off the bottom do you try to keep the hook?

Yes that is what is nice about it...you can reel it all the way in cast out and have it set for say 14ft. and it will slip to that depth.....I try to set it for about 6 inches off bottom.....A easy way to set it is using a depth finder from winter....clip it on your hook lower it down till it hits bottom reel your line down till your rod tip is at the water ...lift up and adjust your knot so it is around 6in. - 1 ft. bellow the rod tip!! You are all set then!! Reel in take the depth finder off...load up with a minnow and away you go!!

I agree with you HL, 6" off the bottom. unless the weeds are to heavy that you get false alarms, then you have to play around setting the dept so that it lays on or just above the weeds.

This is from last season, but maybe it will help......
Buy some slip bobber stops, which is just a twisted string that gets tied to the line first. They come with small beads that go on the line next. Then thread the line thru a slip bobber, and tie on a hook. I use the same line weight and hook size that Ed uses. Experiment with split shot weights so that the bobber is almost neutral buoyant. What that does for me is, in high wave conditions, the bobber will stay at about the same depth as the wave goes over it. The bobber stop slides up or down the line, which sets the depth of the hook. I use a clip on weight to set it close to bottom. This rig is deadly, all season long.........Maybe it's just me, but this has only worked well for me on the American side. On the Canadian side, mid tight to slack lined perch rigs seem to out produce my slips by about 10 to 1....

Hi folks,
Sorry to disagree with you folks about slip bobbers. Slip bobbers is ok for ice fishing and for bluegills or for use with cane poles. The time you lose waiting for your bait to get down to the perch while I use a simple 2 hook and sinker method, not to mention some double headers that occasionally happen far outweighs wasting my time on slip bobbers if your in it for the amount of fish.
I would put myself against anybody with a slip bobber in a fish contest for amounts caught in any day on the pond. My 45 yrs experience catching perch on the pond requires a feel like no other for the bite, if you develop that you will never use slip bobbers in my opinion.

I fish from shore alot and I use slip bobbers to suspend baits at a depth I want.
I have some here that are about 10" long and 1/2" dia for pike fishing.

Took bro-n-law out on the pone Tues. He don't fish much. Stop at bait shop and got him a slip bobber. They don't work in his close face reels. Just thought I would let everybody know that. We tried the knot one and the little red thing with holes in each end. They would hang up in the reel. He had cheap reels with short poles. I think if his poles were longer so he didn't have to wind the line into the reels it would have work find. I didn't have any trouble with mine on my open face reels. Now if the perch would only bite.
