When you guys rig a slip bobber, do you use a simple hook at the terminal or are you using multihook set ups like crappie rigs? Just curious in case I ever get to go fishing again (sigh).

Just a single hook (don't forget the split shot), if you were to try to put a crappie rig on it would pull the slip bobber down with it.

Some times I will put a few beads on just above the hook. sometimes it helps other times it doesn't. For the most part plain hook works best for me.

The way I see it Slips are the best method for catching perch this time of year, but you have to know how to use them.

I learned from some old man, I think he goes by the name Ed Michrina

I use a slip bobber BOTH ways...depending on the depth, wind, and other conditions. Witht he right bobber ( I use the WAVE buster brand-- its a simple plastic tip with a foam stick that can be cut to a desired lenght based on the weight of the rig) and NO bead is requiered for the bobber stop. A simple bobber stop knot is all that is needed with this setup. I use the smaller ones for Ice Fishing, and the 5 inch model for perch rigs.

yea I don't like to use a bead. It freezes up in the colder good fishing times.

When the tempertaure fall's, the perch school up, I kinda like a 1/2 to 3/4 oz jig head, with a big shinner on the jig off the bottom of a perch rig, get's me to the bottom quick, plus I have another "shinner" on the bottom. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work. What the heck, never know unless you try. :bash:

Our best day "perchin", late November, four guys, one dry gallon of minnows, off of the Puce River, about 12-13 foot of water, fished out the minnows, went home with about "200" perch, give or take a few. :o

Took us two days to clean "em", but we ate well all winter.

The boat " Egg Ceptional", The Captain "Captain Terry", one of the greatest boats on the lake, a 32' Egg Harbor, close the doors, turn on the heat, and take a break.

Life is good, great memories, lot's of fun. One of these days I will learn how to post pictures. :bash:

Fond memories, for you younger "peoples", this is the greatest part of Michigan weather, the Fall, enjoy it, it will slip away so fast, you won't even remember. :bash: Take a kid fishing!

Slip bobbers work OK when the fishing is slow but they rarely get used on my boat. When I have to use them, I am usually desperate to catch a Perch dinner. I’d much rather use a 4 hook set-up in Canada or 2 rods with double hooks when I get stuck fishing the American side. :p :yikes:

One thing nice about the slips are they cover a nice area away from the boat! You also have a free hand then instead of holdind 2 rods..especially if you have a few people on the boat! Thats why i like to have one perch rig and a slip rig!

I think some of the guys mis-understood what I meant about the Bead, I sometimes slide a couple beads and a little spoon on to the lead that holds the hook.

I agree that using a bead above the slip bobber is more trouble than it is worth.

And there is almost nothing like watching that bobber go under. Sometimes fast, sometimes it just eases under the water. Nothing like it except maybe a ten pound pike chase your lure about five feet from you. OOOOO Baby!

C'mon ice!

I agreed MiketheElder, I just love to watch the bobber go under also. Sometimes at night before I go to sleep I see the bobber go under in anticipation of the next trip.

It is Great

On some slip-bobbers it seems you need a bead because of the hole size in the slip!.........when I am up at houghton lake Walleye fishing i love to jig with one pole and set a slip with the other....when that walleye hits the bobber they will take it down about 6in. then stop............when it starts to go again set the hook and wham....nice eater Eye!!!!!..........that time between when the bobber goes down and then takes off again is pure excitement!!!!......Come-on ICE

Hey gone fishing I think you'll lose the battle with the slip bobber fans ;)

I've noticed during ice fishing when the little ones are mixed in with the jumbo perch. they will grab the minnow and run , but when a jumbo grabs it The jumbo just slowly swims away with it or pulls the bobber under and sits ... I use this on open water. when I see that bobber go under nice and slow and then a slow swim. Good chance its a Jumbie :) .

I think like john . When the fish are eating and on fire, there is nothing better than using a perch/crappie rig to keep the fish under the boat.

This all depends on the wind and where you anchor. if you anchor off the bow and your boat drifts 20 feet each way . I'd go with a slip bobber to get my bait to the same spot no matter where the boat was. the perch rigs will be trolling back and forth.

anchor off the back and the wind go's slack odds are the slips are going to work better cuz the boat is moving all around. 75 foot of line slight wind to no wind current??? Most guys think the bite turned off when you moved 45 foot off your bite. and back and etc..

nice one foot chop and boat anchored off the back!!! The perch rigs can't be beat. and 2 rigs are better at this time than a perch and slip rig.

The fish are scattered or your watching less experienced anglers. one slip each and one crap rig. the nice thing about slip bobbers. you could have all kinds of trouble in the boat and you see your bobber go down. --let it go, it should be weighted so the fish doesn't feel the bobber--Get the rigs back in the water and then pull your Jumbo in . Nice

Now slips are kinda hard to get used to. most guys set the depth to 6 inch to 1 foot off the bottom and leave it at that. It works at times but those times perch rigs would work also . . you have to adjust to the wind. 1 foot chop you want it just touching the bottom . 2 foot I'd use 1 1/2 foot. etc.. There are days I want it just off the weeds, so the drift finds the fish then work the area.

I'm sure I left a lot out. Cloudy water try bouncing the bottom or adding flash. (I cant give it all away) Or lifting it up a bit.

Then as it gets dark lifting the rig works (if there are no pike in the area) O-well I could go on and on. but its just little things that have worked for me.

I think the slips will get bigger fish on a real real light bite. unless your holding the rod 100% of the time or unless your like Gone Fishing and Just happen to be over a large School of Jumbo perch that want to join his buddies in the 7 gal. pail :) :)

I use some old dacron for a knot just tie 4 half hitches no stop bead needed . I'm very selective about the bobbers and hooks. I like thill bobs and true turn red hooks #8 with 6lb. vanish. Ya what they said I also see bobbers slippin in my sleep. :yikes:

What could I possibly add to that! ;) I guess I'll just say, well said young man! ;) :p I still will search before I resort to slips :bash: but if I'm in need........................they do work! ;) :)
