OK here's my situation...

I can get a new Hoyt Ultramag for 400 bucks.

Or, I can get a new Reflex Grizzly (300 bucks) or Buckskin (350 bucks).

Which is the better bow, and which would you purchase if you were choosing between the 3? :bash:

Thanks!

I would try them all and get the one that feels , and shoots the best for me . I would probably go for the Hoyt .

Tn, what you may not realize is that KH does not have the ability to try them out as he does not have the availibility of sporting goods stores/outfitters in Kodiak....a bad situation, indeed.

KH, I don't think any of them would be a bad chioce, and I think you'll mainly get peoples preferences with your question, unless some of our more experienced shooters have had a chance to shhot the models mentioned. Might as well ask which is better between Chevy, Ford, etc.

I'd go with what your gut tells you, and with whichever gives you the best warranty/return policy.

Anyone of them is a good choice and they are all made by the same company....Hoyt. The Reflex Grizzly is last years Hoyt MagnaTec. I used to have a Magna Tec and it was a great bow for the money. Quiet and vibration free at the shot, just a little heavy. The new Hoyt Ultra Mag is an updated version of that Magna Tec (or Grizzly) and is a little lighter and has a little thinner grip. These two bows do not have machined aluminum risers but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in side by side shooting. The Buckskin does have a machined aluminum riser and all three feature the cam.5 system which flat out works. My first choice would be the Ultra Mag, but if that is stretching your budget I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep over buying the Grizzly!

I know I do not reply much, but this I felt I could leave you with some advice. I have tried all 3 this year early on and was able to shoot all of them. All that swamp monster said is true. Even the money problem. Each of them have the same warranty. My biggest thing was the feel and what felt right to me. Well I was shooting a Fred Bear Kodiak II compound for the longest time. So, it was hard to make the adjustment from the way it felt handle wise. Not the weight just the way the grip felt. Anyways since the Fred Bear was a little more bulky and fit my hand perfect the Hoyt is slim and it felt like I had nothing in my hand. So, what I did was get the Sims wrap and wrapped it around my handle and now I can't tell that difference anymore. Long story short, I went with the Hoyt UltraSport, It was a money thing for me since I had a new born on the way. You know what, I would not trade it for the world now. I can careless that it is a low end bow; it does what I need it too and even better. I got 2 pins to prove it when Adams had it’s 3d shoot they had the bionic bunny set up and I am the only one there that day that put 2 arrows in a row in it with break one arrow.

Anyways it's in what feels right for you,

Good luck

Go buy a Mathews

I know bowhunters who are actually switching from Matthews to Hoyt. Shoot one from 15-40 yards at five yard intervals. Impressive bow (so far I am still sticking with my Matthews but I am tempted).

Go buy a Mathews

If you wanna give me the extra 400 bucks for a Mathews, feel free! :)

Seriously, I like the split-limb design, as well as the cam and 1/2.

Besides, EVERYONE has a Mathews!

Kodiak, buy the bow you want regardless of brand name. The name means little once it's set up correctly and you like it. I' like Hoyt but thats because they have served me well over the years and I could give you numerous reasons why I recommend them.

He very clearly stated that a Mathews was not an option, but just like whenever a question about a bow manufacturer comes up, some Mathews owner always put there 2 cents in. Why do you do that? Quit pushing your product on everyone else !!! They dont make the only bow on the market.

Anyway, I purchased a Hoyt this year after shooting a Parker and a Mathews also. I really liked the Mathews and the Hoyt. They shot the same, felt the same, had the speed, everything. It was just a decision on personal preference. Personally, I liked the Hoyt better due to the split limb design, the cam and 1/2 is awsome, and the construction of the limb pockets looked a lot more durable then the Mathews.

I would go with the Hoyt Ultramag. Especially if is has the new limbs (XT 1000, XT 2000). I bought an Xtec, but that seems out of your price range.

I purchased a hoyt ultramag this spring and I love it. Shoots flat and fast very forgiving quiet and no hand shock. when I went in looking for a new bow I asked what the difference between the Ultramag and the top of the line Hoyts were the only difference is the riser it is a cast riser where as the razortec and ultratec are a machined riser. The limbs and everything else are the same they are the xt2000 limbs. So for me was the machined riser worth the extra 200 bucks..... nope. Get the Hoyt you will love it.

Well if that's the case ,then Kodiak won't be buying a new Hoyt unless there is a dealer in the area . They don't sell them by mail order . That's why they created the Reflex line of bows .http://michigan-sportsman.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

I've yet to hear a negative comment about the Grizzly, for what it's worth.

He can still get a Hoyt. Many shops are willing to ship bows so it's as easy as making a few phone calls. Lots of dealers on Ebay as well.

I think the Mathews owners feel obligated to advertise as much as Mathews Inc. does for some reason.

I just sold my Mathews this year and bought a Hoyt RazorTech. I like the Hoyt better than my old Mathews but hey......everyone is different. My bow before the Mathews was a Hoyt, who knows.....my next one may be another Mathews. :dizzy:

I also bought my 15 year old a Hoyt UltraMag this year and it is an awesome bow. I really don't think that you can go wrong with this bow.

Thanks,
Pat

I'd go with the ultramag out of the three...One reason is the limbs. With the ultramag you're getting the xt2000 limbs as apposed to the glass composite limbs that are found on the grizzly and buckskin. Not to mention the new 3d ribbing technology that hoyt has incorporated into their magnesium risers is sure impressive...you really can't even tell if it's a forged aluminum or magnesium riser...not to mention that 50% of your purchase isn't being spent on advertising so that every average joe can say that their second rate mathews is the best because they have more pages in the periodicles.

Fortunately I DO have a Hoyt dealer here...and fortunately he was having a 20% off sale on all Hoyt bows...and fortunately I am now the proud owner of a new Hoyt UltraMag! :)

We are coming back to Traverse City in a week to visit family, and I'm bringing the bow with me...going to have Gauthier's set it up for me correctly...

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
