As a successful applicant for a deer hunt on the Fed Refuge this year, I received a letter from the Refuge yesterday with a copy of a new health advisory issued by the State of Michigan reguarding eating deer meat & other game from the Tittabawassee flood plain. The basics are Do not eat Deer liver from the area, limit consumption of Deer meat, do not eat Turkey from the area & limit the amount of Squirrel eaten from the area.

Wow, I'm sure I'll still hunt there, but not sure the meat will end up in the freezer if I am succesful. Who else got the letter? What are your thoughts?

I hate to say it, but I thought everybody knew this already. That area is so badly polluted under the silt of the river.

No letter, but I heard about it. Did the deer pick up the contaminants by drinking the water or by eating the food that transfered the contam's? It's bad with the deer, but what about the poor people that live around those old DOW sites?

This is a terrible deal for all involved. I used to live in that atea and my in laws hunt all over in there. They take turkeys and deer and Iwonder about all of the waterfowl feeding in the area. It is a shame that places like Dow have in essence ruined the ground forever or at least for the rest of our lifetimes. That stuff just doesn't go away it sits there for years and years. I think it depends on where you shoot the deer at for one. Secondly I also think I would probably eat it in moderation without the heart and liver. I would not feed this to young children (especially girls) or to my wife or any other childbearing age woman just for safety sake; however, like i said my in laws have been eating deer from around there for years. Check the map on where you will hunt I am sure there are areas that are worse than others based on the general flow of the rivers. Example St Charles areas should be a lot less risky that hunting right on the Tit river. Anyway, enjoy the hunt there are some massive racks walking in there every year and take some water from home to drink huh

PropBuster,

I believe you need to arrow, track and retrieve a deer for this to concern you. All ribbing aside, I haven't received that letter. I'll stop by this weekend and give it a read. I wonder if I will need my LED pin for those low light close encounters or will they walk in resembling a glowing ghost??

10 years ago we were looking for a cottage on a lake I naively looked into some places on the Tittabawassee chain-of-lakes. I was surprised at how stupidly inexpensive that cottages were going for, something like 1/2 of a comparable place 30 miles east. Asked around and found out why.

glad I bought where I did!

Now think about another hot spot which you wouldn't think would be bad, but back when they discovered pbb's in cows. Can anybody remember where all the cows that were contaminated went (for the whole world by the way)?

Call up a well digger in out very own Mio and ask them about the contaminated ground water. They all know about it. But if your looking for hunting property there are some real deals to be found.

All the problems are from midland and down stream, this issue has been around for a very long time just more light has been shined upon it lately due to a newer orginazation against pollution in the tittabawassee river, sorry I can't recall the name of that orginazation, at least they are finally being heard

If you were to research this further, you would find that the ppm of pollutants and/or dioxin that is and has been found is so minute that it shouldn't be a concern.

Here is the link to a study that Dow Chemical has conducted regarding dioxin and it's effects on wild game in the Tittabawassee river area if anyone is interested.

I've been eating the meat for a few years now and i've only noticed slight twitches and jitters while i'm at work or on the toilet.

Who'd have thought that low cholesterol, high protein venison could cause dain bramage? I've been eating it for years! :dizzy:

Eric

And about those PBB cows--isn't it odd that our ancestors thought that if you buried something in the ground it just went away??
