we're heading up Friday for 5 days of hunting and fishing. Wondered if anyone has been out fishing up there lately? Hows the salmon doing?
We'll be just west of the Soo.

Around Marquette we are seeing a few fish in the rivers, seems to be looking like a better season for pinks, kings, and cohos. The sunny, warm weather and low water levels have stalled out the salmon run a little bit lately but there are fish available for those who look.

Heading back up this weekend for the last weekend of brookie fishing. Did well over labor day weekend. Still looking for that 16+ incher, though. Just need to put in more time, maybe?

Got some nice brookies this weekend. Got a new personal best at 15 inches. Only an inch away from master angler. Didn't have the digital camara, but did take some pictures with a disposable. Will try to post them when I get them developed.

Fishing is a lot better now that we had some rain a couple days ago. Today i saw a guy with nothing but a huge treble hook sitting at the site of the former old dam on a local river snagging fish after fish. I can understand getting snags on such small rivers but nothing but a treble hook and no bait or anything on it?? I told him it was illegal and he didn't seem to care, what is the rap line number? Never had to call about anyone before but this guy jsut pissed me off.
Mabye you made it down today and saw him to pikedevil he was there for awhile. I think you were fishing the other day next to me but im not sure, when you kept landing the pinks while i kept landing trees and anything else that was on the bottom and not a fish..

Yeah I stopped by and saw a guy up there ripping away. I stared him down for awhile from across the river and he seemed pretty nervous, I whipped out my cell phone and pretended to make a phone call to see if I could get him spooked but he didn't seem to care . I didn't realize there were any fish, he didn't hook any dorsals while I was there. I prolly was the one catching pinks, noone else even seems to know they are there. I went down to the the "other" river last night and didnt see much of anything, only a couple kings and landed 2 pinks including this one, Its just a little one but it proves there are still a few fresh fish pinks moving in.

THE BAIT SHOP GUY

A friend and I just recently busted a snagger on the Escanaba River. There's a small group of guys that insist on snagging fish there the last couple seasons. Problem is that they do it by "speed reeling" big, deep diving crankbaits. They reel so fast that if they bump a fish, it snags them in the side. C.O.'s can't do a thing because they're using legal gear. Last year we gave these guys a bunch of grief about what they were doing. When ever we were there, (catching lots of fish using legal methods,) they would release their snagged fish right away. Learned second hand that the would keep them when we weren't there.
My buddy and I were coming home from bass fishing and noticed one of their trucks parked at the dam, so we went down just too see what was going on. Sure enough, one of these guys snags a 15 pound female right in the side. He was so busy admiring his "catch" that he didn't notice me taking pics with my digital. I was hoping he'd let it go and I could delete the pictures but he hauled it right up to his truck and went back to "fishing." While he was busy with that, we took more pics of his truck and license plate and put in a call to the R.A.P. line. 1-800-292-7800. C.O. called us later for the details and got our statements the next day.
15 pounds of fish at $10 a pound restitution equals a pretty good fine. Hopefully he's learned his lesson. Haven't seen him or his buddies down there for the last few days. Man, it was sweet!

Good job! Keep up the good work. I don't put up with snaggers and would do the same. It's good to keep that camera with you at all times.
