Ahh yes...A fish story!!!:)
Once upon a time....
On Saturday, the 28th, I took my 13 year old daughter Kristi and 10 year old son Matt out perchin on Erie. I have a place on Kellys Island and we just pushed my 14' Lund off the beach and away we went. We tried a few usually reliable spots, but nothin doin, so I decided to move an bit more towards Middle Bass and try. Well, we were about halfway between Kellys and MBI when we anchored down and started catchin' some perch, doin pretty good in fact. We were using our light spinning rods, 6 lb test mono, frozen minnows and thin wire gold long shank # 6 hooks-(my standard perchin set up). Anyway in the first 45 minutes we had 22 in the box and things were goin pretty nice. It was about then that Kristi sets the hook on another "perch" and our day took a rather dramatic change. She was crankin' away on the fish and I kinda noticed that she was taking a while to get it in (I set the drag real light on the kids reels). I asked here if she had the bottom and she said she didn't know. So I asked her to stop reeling, she did, but the spool was still spinning-backwards:yikes: . I tightened up the drag slightly, but that didn't help and the fish was still headed to MBI, so, up anchor, start up the motor and the chase was on:tdo12: . She did a fantastic job fighting the fish, it made several long runs, stayed deep and just bull dogged the whole time. After about 20 minutes, the fish stopped the long runs and just stayed deep. I shut the motor down and Kristi fought it for another 10 minutes, then she began finally gaining ground on it ! It's, coming up, a little more... a little more (I have the net ready), I see it-its a sheephead???- It's the biggest sheephead I've ever seen-by far:evil: . I netted it and all we could say, was OHMYGOD!!!! My first thought was what is the Ohio state record , well this fish turned out to be a 19 lb 8 oz. sheephead!!! The Ohio record is 23 lb 8 oz:( .
What a fish!-What a day!-what a Daughter!!!!;)
