Not really. I do think that Garmin has some 1:24,000 topomaps for some of the national parks. That is about the best you are going to do right now. I went through this same thing in the spring.

If you want one that you can load into your Garmin and onto you home PC then MapSource is your ONLY alternative. I don't believe that any of the really detailed topos you can buy from National Georgaphic or Gazzettere will actually load in your hand held which really limits the purpose of having one. Granted, you can download waypoints, landmarks and tracks from your handheld to the topo on the PC, but what good is that - you want the topo on your handheld.

I have a version of MapSource that I bought 2 years ago and is is just fine for chasing my setter through the UP and northern lower. Plenty of detail for me.

I've been using the Magellan Sport Track Map and the MapSend Topp software for just about a year. Couldn't be happier. Very detailed, scary accurate, and really pretty easy to use. And the best part is that you don't have to remortgage the house to pick it up. You can find the GPS for $199 after rebate and the software runs about $80 beans.
