Left the dock Saturday morning with my buddy and one of his friends in search of some Erie perch. We set up at Sputnik and even with a move we couldn't get anything going. There was about 20 boats out and with a look through the binocs no one else has getting them either.
My buddy made a call on the radio to see if anyone was getting any walleye. Those of you who fish Erie know that the walleye bite has been tough the last few weeks. He got a call from a guy fishing south of West Sister in 27 - 29 FOW, had 2 in the box and marking lots of fish. We pulled in the lines and headed for West Sister.
We set up and immediately saw the marks. Lots of marks from the bottom to 3 feet above. So we trolled harnesses, pink, gold with red beads, chartruse and green on an easterly heading in the area, at 1.3-1.7 mph and picked up 3. Then we turned around and changed plans because the amount of marks we saw should have given up more than 3 fish, running 6 lines. So we went to a spoon and small crankbait set up. Stinger spoons in shrimp, frankenberry, and various cranks the only producer being an orange ripshad, 120 back with a 1oz snap weight (3 or 4 fish), 2.0-2.5mph. We picked up another 6 on the westerly troll.
Time ran out for me and we had to go in. 9 walleye for three of us. If I could have stayed we would have turned around and ran that line again and finished up the three man limit. All nice fish. Smallest was about 18" and most were in the 21"- 22" range.
A great day on Erie sure makes up for the slow ones!
Scott, my buddies friend.
