I know the feeling i shot one 6 times in the head point blank with a 22 and it took him 12 hours to die

some one told me just take it to a lake and throw the trap and all in but that would realy suck to die that way
good luck

Taking 6 .22's in the head and then lingering for 12 hours seems like it would suck worse than drowning, and letting an animal linger for 12 hours is not very merciful. Please tell me your post is inaccurate.

I would say a good shot to the head or neck should be quick.

I hunted coons for ten years, even climbled hemlock trees and shot them out of the top with one shot. Of course falling 45 ft. quickened there death also. No matter what the critter is, I hate to see anything suffer. One shot to the base of the head should do it.

the first shoot was in the head between the eyes. the second was at the base of the head. so i think i am hitting them in the right area. they just thrash too much for me. i think when i shoot them they should just die fast and get it over with. i too hate to see anything suffer. the drowning thing sounds like a good idea but i have no lakes within a shot distance to take them. any other ideas??

Because the dogs have them tree, and they are looking down at us, I shoot them right between the peepers with softpoints. But 'coons are real tuff! I've dropped them out of trees before with a head shot, and they still have enough left in them to try fighting the dogs. Most of the time though, they're dead when they hit the ground.

:Dguy down the road a piece from me live traps them, used to give them rides and set them free till he saw one with an ear missing show up again now he calls me to shoot them before he sets them free HE HE. I shoot them at the base of the skull angleing to the nose with a 22 and hollow points. their eyes even pop out and they don't even wiggle.

I never had too much problem with the coons, 1 or 2 in the brain pan and its usualy all over. Opposums are the tuff ones, not enough gray matter for the lead to have an effect on!:D
What ever you do don't shoot a skunk in the head! Instant release will be your reward:eek:

 Is there a way to pop a skunk and not get them to spray? Back when I was in college, my dad would trap for raccoons at a lumber yard he worked at. Coons can do a lot of damage at a lumber yard. But every so often we would get a skunk in the trap. I would say my dad was 50/50 on shooting them and not getting them to spray. My dad would tell me to shoot them in the head, but I have been told by a lot of other people not to. Is there a spot to shoot them and not to get them to spray, or is it the luck of the draw?

For coon, a bullet in the head or blunt force trauma to the head is the norm. A little thrashing is gonna be natural. Skunks though, are a different story. Lowering a covered trap into water works, but carbon dioxide chambers are recommended. Many nuisance control companies have them. Maybe call them to do the "dirty work". Good Luck!!

I always shot them with a pellet gun in the lungs and left to check my other traps. They basically drowned. When I returned in a hour or two they were always dead. Not pretty, but effective. The hard part is skinning them without letting it go. A feet I've never mastered !

The best way I have found to get rid of them is "Golden Marlin Flybait" & Pepsi. Take a small tuna fish sized container fill it about 2/3rds full of flybait and then fill the rest with Pepsi. Racoons love it, they usually are found dead within 1 foot of the dish. I have also gotten possumns with this mixture. Cats don't bother it, I don't have a dog so I don't know if they would eat it.

I have been shooting them in the head with a 410 while they are in a live trap and they expire in under 20 seconds

You mean to tell us you take thier top off with the 410. and they don't reward your efforts? I'll swear a 22. will guarantee a scenting:D

Rick, I use a live trap around the barn or coup and at 4:00 am when I'm getting ready for work my aim isn't with me yet ,lol

I didn't want to waste good a good Coke on Racoons so I use Pepsi instead.
