got the chance to get out to my uncles today and fish for about 3 hours this morning. in the time i was there i hooked into about 20 bass and 1 HUGE crappie.
i measured the bass at 14 in and est. to be about 2 lbs. he was a fat one. lost another that was bigger than than on a gold spinner. (lost the damn spinner too!!) most bass came on a chartruese mister twister with a blade. or the gold inline spinner.
the crappie i caught was a total surprise. i was working an area that i had seen alot of surface activity earlier. i tried everything and couldnt hook even the little gills. so i tied on a bass stopper rubber worm and on the second cast my line took off. i thought it was a bass at first, but when i got it to the boat i was shocked to see the size of the fish. it measure out at 16 in. (sorry i forgot to put this here earlier.)
i did have one problem though. my line kept twisting up on me and causing me some birds nests in my spinning reel. it pissed me off really bad, but i cant for the life of me figure out why this was happening. there is no line twist when i first start out, but after a while it just seems to kinda happen.
and by the way i was not using splitshots glx. i was using my quantum setup
till next time

Really, that is so cool.
Your drag could be too loose causing the line to twist when reeling in a fish, or the rubber worm could be spinning when you retreive it, also causing line twist. I've even had it with just a bad batch of line. Sounds like you had some excellent fishing. Chad.

Is the twisting only ocurring while using the rubber worm? Are you using a Texas Rig? I would bet that the worm is spinning on you.

thanks for the help guys. it really didnt happen when i had the worm on. the worm was twisting in the water, but i thought it was supposed to do that.
the line twist really didnt happen until i put the mister twister on. then all of a sudden, wham i saw it as i was reeling in one of the many bass i caught. i had to strip some line off the reel, after i landed the fish, just to get to the nest.
SFK, when you use a barrel swivel, do you run a leader off of that to connect to the bait, or what?? i have thought of doing that, but dont really want to have to tie on a leader time and time again, if you know what i mean. Did you use one when we were at the MO?? i guess i should have been more nosy and looked to see your setup!!
thanks again guys

Thats a nice crappie! I was gonna tell you about the swivel but Serial beat me. But thats the way to go to stop the twisting line.

it might be in the way you are spooling up your line. on a spinning reel, if you are not paying attention on the direction the line is coming off of the spool, you may end up with twist from the start. good luck.
Split rings help to lessen twist, also they give the lure better action. My guess would be to try a split ring, the action can be alot better then a swivel since it is directly attached to the eye. Many tourney pros will use split rings in place of swivels!!! But yeah, what SKF said, it helps alot to have one of these!:D

well i went out today and have very minimal luck. i put a swivel on one of my rods and left the other one without. i didnt get any line twist on either of them, so i have come to the assumption that it must have been because my drag was a tad to loose when fighting the fish. i tried not to fight when he was running, but i guess i must have.
but i did find out that with some lures you just cant use a swivel. it affects the action of the lure way to much. so i guess i will leave one rod with swivel and the other without so i can work both ways when i have too.
thanks for the help guys, i appreciate it.

One more thing for you to try, back-reel instead of using the drag. Works great in big fish with light line situations.

Quix, your right there are some lures that you just simply cannot use a swivel. Just gotta tie it on, what were you using that you couldn't use the swivel?

i was using a Blue Fox VIBRAX spinner and a couple of spnnerbaits with dual blades. the vibrax just kept getting wrapped around the swivel when the blade would spin, and the spinnerbaits were just to big to use a swivel with.
i really didnt like the way the mister twisters looked either on a swivel. just leaves too much room for the blade to get wrapped around the swivel as you retrieve it.

Quix,
Not sure when the last time was that you spooled the reel, but that could be where your problem came from.
In case you are not aware, when you spool a spinning reel you have to lay the spool of line on the floor on its side with the label facing upward. This is because of the direction that the line is wrapped in the factories. After about 50 yds of line or so, you may notice a slight twist starting on your line. Just take the filling spool and flip it over (label down) and continue. Anytime even the slightest twist appears, simply flip the spool over and you are guaranteed a nice straight spool. Hope the info helps.
FISH ON!!!

i got is spooled when i bought it from gander mountain. i hope that is not the problem. i have never heard of the line twisting when put on with one of the machines that they have to do it.
i just think that it is because of the drag being to loose when i was fighting some bass.
