OK so if I want to sight in my .30-06 to be able to hit the vitals on anything out to (but NOT beyond) 150 yards, where should the point of impact be at 100 yards?

Thanks.
Andy

It all depends on what loads you are using to site in.

Off the top of my head though I would have to say at the most there would be a 2-3 inch differance between 100 and 150 with an .06.

Kodiac Hunter,

150 gr. on @ 100 -3.6 @ 200

180 gr. on @ 100 -5.0 @ 200

If you sight in 2" high at 100 then you will be good out to 200 so you can hold on at any distance out to 200 yrds and you will be in the vitals.

Probably a little under +2" @ ioo yds.

Depends on your load.

Michigan bird hunter is correct. To be dead nuts at 200 yds, you should be right around 2 in. high at 100 yds. depending on the load. 30-06 rules!!

Lets just say I shot a lot in the military, enough to know you must know the individual weopon you shoot. Iv'e killed many big game at distances of 300 plus, I know at 200 dead on 300 2-3 in. low 400 16-24 in low . depending on the load. you must shoot that round and that round only at the actual yardage you are confident shooting.

So it's the same at 250 as it would be at 150 then, if I figure 2-3" high at 100.

Same topic different gun
30-30 170 grain sighted in @ 50
What would be the variance at 25 yds?
What about 100 yds

If someone can find a chart please post a link.

I hunted in the Bob marshall wilderness for elk. the guides there were crazy. they had us 8 in. highat 100. drove me crazy! very sloppy! maybe at 700 yds you might lob a round in. so to answere , you would be lower at 250 than 150 ' probably 1-2 in. there is a curve . involved, the heavier the lead the more the curve. very very close the more I think about it.

Arrow flinger I don't shoot a 30-30, but with that grain and powder I'd say at 50 yds you will be at least 1 in. low at 100 and just over a foot low at 200. It is a close guess.

Why? Here we go,alot of those ballistic charts are set up by manufacturers of ammo and independent pro shooters,a lot of variables come in to play.Ammo, conditoin of gun, shooter ability, temp and temp of gun barrel(3 quick shots-get it).I guess what it boils down to is the charts are a guide line and are by no means carved in stone.I've seen some pretty heated arguments about bullet trajectory based on charts.

Hey skull,

Those are some good points.

But at the distances that are being asked about I think they are pretty much no brianers on big game.

No once you get out past 200 yards then the real fun stuff starts.

The temperature of the air along with all those other varible's you listed can really affect you shooting.

Hard to believe but I had a book's worth of dope on one single rifle and one single type of round. There could be ten inchs differance or more at 1000 meters. Depending on how cold or hot it was.

But in all reality a 30.06 sighted in at 100 yards, the shooter will barely be able to tell there was any drop at all at 150 with a normall type say 165-180 grain bullet, (On Big Game).

Just my thoughts

Sorry,I did'nt mean to come off as a long gunner or a sniper. It was proven to me some years back at the club that the charts don't always hold true after I drug one out and quoted from it and got put in my place from a couple of Camp Perry shooters.

Don't worry about it guys. Shooting is supposed to be fun and I was just pointing out that Robert had a lot of experience in the sport. Some people have just done it for a long time and want to have their say count when they know how it works.

Camp Perry shooters have dusted me many times when I shot a lot and I am a fair shot myself! NEVER make any bets against these guys. They usually don't even smile when they take your money....

I have all the respect in the world for you all, especially for someone that retired as a pro. rifleman. (Mcoy.) I'm just a dumb grunt that loves hunting out west. hense proficiency. Although I did compete in shooting while in "Boeslager". I'm sure nobody has heard of that. I do have some questions but I'll start a new topic when it's relavent.

This is the answer to all your questions....select your gun, amo and it'll tell you the skinny!

Again though...this chart is rule of thumb. If you want to truly be dead nuts reload your own cartridges, and shoot a lot of rounds.

It's not very realistic like most manufactures numbers. Numbers are based on a 24" test barrel, not a rifle. It would be nice if they used a 700 to give realistic numbers. They'll on give you a vague idea in my opinion. You still have to shoot the distance to know.
