hi all, I am taking my test for a CCW and i need 200 rounds of factory ammo. I shoot a para-ordance p-16 limited (40 cal) I shoot ipsc so I reload al my ammo, so... i am not up to date on the fatory stuff. i am looking for input from other shooters that have found a good factory ammo. I have some speer lawman that shoots ok. but would like some JHP ammo also. Ammo needs to group good not be the fastest or the most explosive. Thanks Steve

Give Remingtons "Golden Saber" a try, I know there are quite a few Law inforcement people carrying it in their .40 cal. 165gr..

We were shooting Winchester 155 GR silvertip hollow point but we are switching to Federal. We had a number of problems with Winchester, light loads and bad primers including a gun blowing up because the round did have enough to even push the bullet completely out the barrel and the next round blew the gun. The Sig P229 is a pretty good gun though, proof positive, the shooter had no injuries at all, the barrel and slide were destroyed.

I like using Winchester USA brand for the range. In .40 S&W is reasonably cheap, and with 180 gr bullets, it feels about like most factory preimum ammo when you shoot it.

Boehr,

Your problems with the Winchester ammo are more than a little disconcerting. Anyone else have similar problems?

I shoot Winchester Range Ammo, about $11.00 per 50. They are flat nose, full metal jacket, 165 grain loads. They shoot pretty good.

I am aware of some problems with .40SW rounds with the 180 grain bullet. Here is a link that might help explain the issue going on with that round.

in order to save a little money if you shoot alot you could go with a 165 grain full metal jacket for all your target shooting and for self defense switch to a 165 grain brass jacketed, hollowpoint.after a lot of shooting at various ranges they shot the same . remington and federal both load them (personally i would go with the federal, my opinion)one thing you have to watch with the .40 if your shooting reloads thru a semi most manufacturers say do not shoot relaods period.

As far as reloads go there is no gun maker that I have ever heard of that tells you it is ok to shoot reloads. CYOA policy at work. I bought 5 boxes of the magtec ammo. I shot it it groups nicely so it will work for the ccw test. 200 rounds is just getting warmed up. I have shot over 500 rounds in one evening at a match. when mags can hold 18+ rounds and your are shooting ipsc you can go through some ammo. reloading is a must

Steve I just received 300 rds from Cabela's for apx. $50 and that included a free surplus ammo can . I haven't shot them yet but for $.17 cents a rnd I can hardly reload them at that price. I got the CNL but I think the FMJ's were only about $10 more. I'll probably try them out this summer but I'm not into competion just want company when I start wandering around in the swamps up here around Seney. Good Shooting...

I've had great luck with the Winchester Win Clean BEB target loads in my Glock 22. I like Speer Gold Dots for hollow points.

Try http://www.ammoman.com for great deals on bulk ammo.
