For those of you waiting in line for your CCW papers and fingerprints at the Oakland County Sheriff Department, I would like to let you know that my office is adjacent to the Records Bureau. Stop by and say Hello!

The lines are long! It seems like mostly older people, elderly are the majority of applicants. The TV networks are shoving their cameras into everyone's faces too.

Also, it can take up to 6 months for you to get your license, be patient!

So is that the first place we need to visit to get the process started? Or do we have to visit our local city hall first? Also once you get a permit is there a set amount of time you have before you purchase a weapon, or can you just hold the permit indefinitely and purchase a weapon either months or years later if you feel the need?

Steve,

Call your City or Township first to see where you need to go. Some will print you, others won't.

I am not sure if you have to already have a hand gun or not to get the permit. I would not think you do. The permits are good for 3 years, I believe. They are not specific to a certain weapon. Just says you are licensed to carry. You will need a handgun safety class before you are issued the permit.

How many hours of training is required? How much does it cost? And do you have to have your own handgun to take the training? If you do, it almost seems like a catch 22 situation.

A guy I work with went to pick up his application kit today for Wayne County.
He said it was $60 for the kit, $15 for finger printing and $120 for the 8 hr. class.
Plus you have to get the purchasing permit before you can buy the hand gun, and yes I believe you need to have a hand gun before you take the class.
Makes ya wander where the easy part of getting a CCW comes from.

The "easy" part is that there are no longer gun boards that just decide "yes and no" depending on who the person is, who they know, or which way the wind is blowing.

Yes, of COURSE you need to have a permit to purchase a weapon. I have been told that you do not HAVE to own your own firearm for some of the training classes, however, wouldn't you want to?

Lastly, why would you want to take the class for CCW, unless you already had a pistol? The only reason I can think of would be to find out the huge amount of legal responsibility you will take on by having one.

Ok, this is the gotcha as I see it. If you don't have the permit yet and buy the pistol for the class, what are the restrictions for getting it to and from the class in your car? How do you prove you are in transit to or from the class? Maybe a bit paranoid but I think you can see my point. As for why I would want the permit but not a gun, well maybe at this point in my life I don't want the awesome responsibility that goes along with it, but I want to get the permit while the gettin's good, so later on if I decided I wanted to carry I could just use the permit and I'd be set.

Ok, ok! But what if the wife won't let me keep it in the house? Are there any places that will store them for you?

Steve, once you have the permit you can leave it in your vehicle.

Ok, let me see if I have this whole process straight.

1. Go to store and attempt to buy handgun. They run the neccessary background checks and I pick up the gun several days later.

2. Transport gun in trunk in some sort of locked case to home.

3. Go to county and get my permit kit and get fingerprinted.

4. While waiting to hear back from county on permit, register for training course, and transport unloaded gun in case in locked trunk.

5. Get permit after X months and can carry the weapon only if entirely concealed on my person.

Anything wrong here?

I would like to congradulate all the fine soprts men and women from the Great State of Michigan on your battle for US 2ND ammendment to the US Constitution this is a great day for your state. CCWP Holder from NYS. Just remember when you go through that road block. To tell the officers that your healed. AND ask tell them the licence in in the back pocket or where ever you have it . And do as i do ask them if they want to see it and how they want you to handle it and or show the LIC.

Steve,

First, go to your local police or sherrif, and get a handgun purchase permit. You can't buy a handgun without one. They are good for a week, I think.

Ann,

I have a question. Does the county have a list of training facilities?
And is there anyone who offers a one day class. I travel for a living so going a couple of hours a night throughout the week won't work for me.

Thanks,
The Nailer

No, unfortunately we do not have postings nor do we offer classes. Just the employees (Deputies) get training through the Department. The Records Bureau has been recommending that people contact the NRA for local classes. Many sportsman's clubs may be offering them too.

You could try calling a local club near you.

I have taken some shotgun training (Clays) through the NRA and they were VERY good. The instructors are always professionals so this would be the best way to get certified.

Steve.....I don't recommend storing any firearms in vehicles for long periods of time. With this new law and more guns out there the average joe auto-theft guy will be looking for guns along with the cell phones people leave in their cars. Get a nice lock box or gun safe for your house if you have kids. Better to be safe than sorry.

I was also surprised how many people thought they needed the CCW permit just to have a handgun in their home. You do not need one to own a handgun or keep one in your residence. You do need a purchase permit and it does need to be registered.

You all missed out yesterday too. I had the privilege of rolling prints all afternoon, the line up is huge! :(

Man I love to hear that the lines are long for the ccw's and that a lot of older folks are getting them. I feel that this is one of the best things to come around in a LONG time. But I sure feel sorry for the first person who has to use that gun...one one knows that the media is going to do.

For those of you that are looking to take a ccw class go to: http://www.mcrgo.org/ Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners. Click on Training/Saftey, then MCRGO Recommended Michigan CCW Instructors. It gives a list of instructors and their phone number, or email. I emailed a bunch of them and found one in my area that does the class for only $85.

Steve and others,

The first thing everyone needs to do is stop trying to rush to obtain their CCW permit. The clock is not ticking and to be legal there is some paperwork and training to do. If I didn't have my permit already, I would have signed up for a class about six months ago. But, the law is passed and now everyone will stand in line to get educated.

If anyone is truly serious about buying a handgun and getting a CCW permit; DON'T BE IN A BIG HURRY!. Even before the new law went into effect, the process was time consuming and patience was the word. If any of you are first time hand gun owners, take the time to learn how to buy one and decide how you'll store it at home once you own it. I have a gun safe that holds all of my handguns and long guns. Invest in one even if you live alone. The danger of being ripped-off will be greater because crooks will be looking for weapons all the more now.

DON'T BE IN A BIG HURRY!!

Become educated, responsible handgun owners and let's prove the "anti's" wrong!!
