Does Remington still make the Viper? I got one a few years ago at Wal-mart for under $100. Had my own scope though. Good buy if you ask me.

Check out the standard Marlin Model 60 with the plain birch stock. This is about $100 gun, sometimes less. Marlin also makes this gun for some "mart mart" retailers under different names that are cheaper yet. Lakefield is one of the names I believe. These guns are not as popular as the Ruger 10/22 but they work nearly as well. I have one that I have had for almost 20 years that has been abused...still works fine. The last shot bolt hold open feature no longer works but it doesn't affect the gun any. If you consider $150-$160 cheap then I would stick with the Ruger 10/22. With a .22 I would stick with new just because they are cheap to begin with and they do tend to get abused unless they are higher end models.
The Simmons .22 MAG series of scopes are cheap scopes that come with rings as well. For the price they work pretty darn well, just don't compare them to something they aren't meant to be. I have one of these in 3x9x32 and it has worked well for it's intended purpose. They also make this scope in a straight 4x which is more than enough.

The Viper is no longer made, it was an experiment that Remington wants to forget. They didn't sell well and you don't see many. The early batches had lots of bugs...typical of Remington .22's but once they got them worked out it was to late.
I like my 597 Remington heavy barrel so far.

Love my old Marlin 60, Got an even older weaver X4 on top of it. Pop bottlecaps with it at 50 yards. Thing is though this thing HATES Remington ammo. about every 10th rd jams. Don't have a problem with any other ammo, Can run hundreds of CCIs through it with out a hitch, First Mag full of Remingtons and it jams.

Nothing beats a good old Ruger 10/22. Especially if ya wanna trick it out, plenty of accessories out there.
I'd stay away from the Remington 597's, I've know a few people on a gun board that have had numerous problems w/theirs.

Marlin Model 60 - I have two, both heirlooms, one from each grandfather. They're both close to or over 40 years old and still work like the day they came out of the box. Ditto on the comment made about Remington ammo, especially the stuff in 500 round "milk cartons".

Second choice would be a Ruger 10/22, another all time favorite that wont bust the bank!

I gotta cast another vote for the Marlin Model 60. I have a 60FS that I picked up at Dunhams a few years ago that I haven't seen sold anywhere else since. The 60FS is blued with a synthetic stock. The FS designation refers to the Williams Fire Sights that came standard on this model. Price was $129.00.
Since then I've mounted a Nikon 4X32 scope on it.
Its a great shooter. At 50 yards 1" five shot groups are quite common with its favorite ammo.
Before I put the Nikon on it I had a Simmons Deerfield 3-9X32 that I picked up on clearance for $35 on it. Out at island lake I had an old timer look at one of my targets/groups and tell me "You're wasting your time at 50 yards. What are you shooting?":p

If you'd like to give my 60 a try (or my Remington Nylon 66) maybe we can work on a M-S shoot at one of the local ranges.;)

Have an old (1970??? I was a bit shorter then, not to mention a lot better looking and younger.) Nylon 66 with about 6 bzillion rounds through it.......topped with a top drawer 4X Tasco....... let me see if I can remember what door it was holding open last time I saw it. I am sure it would like to get out and play.

I have a Marlin, can't remember the model # but is not the cheap 60.
Has the tubular feed & not the clip, never have really been a fan of tubular magazines as you never know when your up to the last shot. At shooting ranges where you can only load one round at a time, forget it & leave it at home it ain't worth it.
Shoots good groups, the only draw back is its pretty darn heavy.
Also have a Ruger 10/22, bought new in 1971 for 69.99 and I know they are about a hundred more now on sale. Alot lighter too.
If it were me I'd spend the extra money on the Ruger.

I'll cast another vote for the 10/22. So far reliable and fairly accurate. I've put many rounds throught it with my children shooting targets and also small game hunting.

drwink has a point but there but even with a mag fed semi-auto shooting at single-load-only ranges can be a pain. The best rifle for this type of shooting would have to be a bolt action IMO.

Shooting my Nylon 66 and loading single-shot is quite easy. I don't know if Remington designed it this way or not but the ejection port is recessed. If you roll the gun onto its left sid while supporting it (bbl pointed down slightly) drop a .22lr into the port with the bolt closed. Rack the action and the round falls into place and chambers. Being left handed it is very easy.
I haven't tried it with my 60 as I've never had to. I'll give it a try tonight and post my results.

I would stay away from the new Reminton 22's. I bough a new remington sem-auto 22 and the clips are made to stick. If you put 10 rounds in the clip it will stick on you everytime. I even bought a new clip thinking the first one was a dud and had the same problem. I have tried different kinds of ammo with the same result and have several friends say the same. Makes no sense to have a 10 round clip if you can only load it with 4 or 5 and feel confortable it will fire correctly.

Just my opion with remington.

SPH,
Are the magazines you have/had the plastic or metal? If plastic, there are metal ones available that perform MUCH better than the plastic. IIRC, Remington has gone back to the metal mags for the 597.

SPH

Yes, they are the plastic ones. I went to duhnams to buy a new one and the guy at the store told me they only made them in plastic so that is what I bought. Thanks for the heads up, I will get online and purchase a metal one as I do not like shooting the gun the way it is.

Thanks,

Sean

SPH,
Go to www.rimfirecentral.com for all kinds of tips on how to fix the magazines as well. They are bit finicky but they can be made livable, and some of the tips will help with the metal magazines as well.

I appreciate all of the information an hopefully I can make the gun "liveable".

As far as the original post, I still would not purchase another Remingtion 22 after dealing with the one I have. For me, a 22 needs to be the most reliable gun in my cabinet as it is the one that I use most. I do a lot of coon hunting with my dog and how the gun functions is the difference between a dead coon and a vet bill sometimes.

My advice is to go with the ruger 10/22 over the marlin. I have both, and the ruger simply outperforms the marlin. Another option is the thompson center arms autoloader. Almost bolt action accuracy with an autoloader. It costs a little more the the basic ruger 10/22 but looks to be a quality made gun.

Kirk,
Take a look at the Ruger 10/22 as mentioned by others. I'd also put in a word for the Remington 597 auto-loader. I've shot both and have the Remington. It is a real sweet rifle.

Bought a New England Firearms single shot in 22lr. Its a tack driver. Its not a gun for a person whos not confident in the first and only shot but thats usualy the one that counts. I plan on getting the 17 rimfire next year in the same gun. You should be able to get gun and scope for $150-$160.

I have a Remington and Marlin semi-auto .22 rifle. The Marlin I love! The thing has never jammed on me and with CCI ammo I can drive tacks with it. I've put over 3000 rounds through it. I tried using cheap remington ammo and the stuff really fouled up the action quickly. The 597 is also an accurate rifle when you find the brand of ammo it likes to shoot. My only complaint is it has a tendency to "stove-pipe" on just about every full magazine.

ih772,
Go to the links posted above to find out how to fix the stove pipe problem with a full magazine on the 597's.
