View Full Version : Leaving Alaska...

Well, I got word today from the assignment officer that there will be no positions available for me here in Alaska next year (which is when I am due to rotate). By the way - I'm active duty Coast Guard.
I could take Juneau, but it's a staff-weenie job, and I'm a field rat. Or I could take a one-year tour in Dutch Harbor, but it's isolated duty (no family) and I won't do that to my wife and son.
So, it's off to the lower-48 we go. Where? Heck, ya got me. We are HOPING for the Great Lakes but it doesn't look good right now. The only other place we want is the North East - Maine - but that's closed up, too.
For you religious guys out there - say a prayer for me so that we don't end up in Los Angeles, NYC, Miami, or anyplace in the south - PLEASE!
Anyhow, I just needed to tell someone - family is tired of hearing about it all!
Thanks for reading.
Andy

Did you get the e-mail I sent you a couple weeks ago about some land for sale here in the eastern UP?

Prayers have been said, but remember the Good Lord does have a sence of humor.
What's on your dream sheet and what does the detailer say? -
A tour at TVC would be cool - Miami is VERY busy station - lots of fun to be had down there -
Good luck and let us know -

Can't do TVC - not an option for me. No way in he!! would I go to Miami. It's gotta be north - and it's gotta be "small" (relatively speaking). I told the detailer, if there's no snow - I don't wanna go. :) I was born and raised in TC - don't wanna go back right now.
No dream sheet yet - don't have a shopping list to use. Hoping for Duluth, Sault Ste. Marie, Milwaukee, Sturgeon Bay, Grand Haven, Massena NY, Buffalo, or any other mid-to-small size Great Lakes unit (I'm an MST so I can only go to MSO/MSD's).
I'll let ya know! Thanks to everyone for the good words.
Andy

Kodiak,
I can't feel your pain, but I can imagine it. I've vacationed in Alaska and have gone after it's salmon and halibit. There was one year that I walked around for atleast 8 months carrying probably 20lb of halibit in my gut (ate it everyday). I've always wanted to spend more time there, it was just never in the cards. I hope to one day go back.
Sorry to hear your bad news.
