I'm not making this up - this is legit TN law:

TCA 70-2-204. Hunting and fishing on farm land — Li-cense
exemption to owner, tenants and their spouses and
children. – (a) The owners and tenants of farmlands, and
their spouse and children, have the right to engage in the
sport of hunting and fishing, subject to all the provisions
of all laws or regulations concerning wildlife, upon such
lands and waters thereon of which they or their spouses or
parents are the bona fide owners or tenants with the per-mission
of the landowner, during the season when it is law-ful
to do so, without procuring a hunting and sport fishing
license. Tenants and their spouses and their dependent
children must be bona fide residents of the state and
must actually reside on the land. Owners and their
spouses and children must be bona fide residents of the
state. Land may qualify as farmland only if it is owned by
no more than one (1) individual or a family; provided, that
if land is owned jointly or in common by persons who are
first cousins related by blood, then such cousins and their
children may hunt small game and fish on such land under
the provisions of this subsection. “Family” means any com-bination
of kinship within the third degree including any
spouse who has an interest in the property. “Tenant” means
an individual who receives compensation such as free rent
or money for acting either in the place of or at the direc-tion
of the landowner in tending to the requirements needed
to care for the farmland. The primary purpose of the ten-ancy
shall be agricultural in nature.

Michigan has the same law.
It is just a little more restricted than Tn.

Small game, fishing on water with no inlet or egress.

'A lot more restrictive'

Act 451 of 1994

324.43514 Hunting and fishing without license; exception.
Sec. 43514.

(1) A resident, the resident's spouse, and the resident's children may hunt small game without a license upon the enclosed farmlands upon which they are regularly domiciled, at a time and in a manner permitted by law; except that they shall obtain a waterfowl hunting license for hunting waterfowl and a federal migratory bird hunting stamp as required by law.

(2) A resident, the resident's spouse, and the resident's children may fish without a license in water wholly within the limits of their enclosed farmlands or other enclosed lands upon which they are regularly domiciled, at a time and in a manner permitted by law.

Don't really care for it. I pay taxes on my land (all woods and swamp) just the same, but the state doesn't cut me no slack. ;)

What is the reasoning for allowing this exception and not allowing it to other land owners? I'm curious.

Many states have this. Ohio is another example that is very similar to the TN
law.

For small game only, I doubt that very many, if any, in Michigan, take advange of it because most hunt in many different locations, not just their own farmland so I don't see it being an issue at all.

if it was some kind of 'homestead' leftover type of thing - ya know - you farm xxx acres for xx years - the land is yours - and your exempt from paying for game permits etc -

I agree with david shane - I pays my taxes too - and would like to hunt my own land - without a permit/lic. but hey - its not to be -

The part that intregued me was the big game aspect in TN - even bear - :chillin:

I think your right Ray - non-issue -

Imagine even trying to attempt to enforce a law like that in TN. Heck, someone's brother, father, and cousin could be the same person.

our poor dnr does the best they can with the limited funds they have. i'm not for lifting license fees. especially when much of our license fees often goes towards purchasing additional state land. (that's my understanding - the rose lake wildlife area states that the land was paid for by hunters).

i truly believe the dnr is doing the best that they can - its a tough balancing act to do what's best for wildlife AND manage realworld issues.

not to mention, licensing for big game provides some type of indicator for expected harvests.

that's interesting, though, ferg. thanks for sharing.
