The following is a list of food plots put in today by my trusty brother. Boy, do I depend on him for alot. We're hunting partners and I am tied up with getting married, so he came through and really got it done in the last 2 days. In these fields, we've gone straight by the book this year. In the spring we got our soil test, and limed and fertilized throughout the rest of spring and summer. Along with this, we also sprayed each field at least twice with strong concoctions of ammonium sulphate and roundup in a 25 gallon sprayer. Yesterday, he plowed everything and tilled each field twice (the second time lightly). Today he spread this seed and is now waiting for our unreliable retired farmer friend to bring us the cultipacker we bought from him 4 months ago! Im prayin he brings it. PLEASE GIVE ME YEY OR NEY'S ON ANYTHING YOU SEE HERE.....WE'RE DYING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BETTER FOODPLOT PLANTINGS! CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISMS WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!

Political views aside. Sounds like you and your brother are really kicking it good job and hopefully that farmer brought you everything you needed from him.

You may want to add urea to your plots containing brassica. They really thrive on nitrogen. Try using 100 #/acre of 46-0-0 and 200#/acre of triple 19.

Since it's a late summer planting and you sprayed twice don't worry about the nitrogen stimulating weed growth this year.

I'll be posting pics on growth of my 7 new plantings through the fall. Planted last Friday and got 1.5" of rain since Monday. My plots should be jumping out of the ground with the next warm up.

Here's some of what I got planted last week. This is an edited copy-paste of a PM to another site member.

.1 acre plot of IWC-tyfon turnip mix. It's for viewing out my daughters' bedroom window at camp.

.52 acre plot of RR soy beans and BFO. It boarders my south line just inside a 8-9 year old planting of Norway spruce.

.25 acre plot of Maximum and Ed's MidMi brassica mix. This plot is a connector plot between the hayfield to the south.

.25 acre plot of Ed's MidMi brassica mix.

.33 acre plot of Maximum and tyfon turnips that adjoins last years buckwheat-Maximum plot that's in my gallery.

.20 acre plot of tyfon turnips that I put in for my youngest daughter. It's on the edge of a bedding-travel area just west of center of my land.

.20 acre plot of Ed's MidMi brassica mix. It's along my west line that adjoins another large hay field.

If I did my calculations right, it gives my 1.85 acres of new plantings. Each was seeded with a slightly heaver than recommended seed rate since it was broadcast and fertilized with 200# triple 19 and 100# urea per acre rate.

Well the farmer did come through for us. He dropped off the cultipacker last night and Ray packed all the plots. It's a cultimulcher!? It has one 8 foot roller, then steel teeth, then another 8 foot roller. In never been packed before, sorta light soil would this implement have displaced the soil too much for the clover to come up?? Gosh I hope not. That was an expensive seeding yesterday. Anyone have any info on this type of cultimulcher and good or bad experiences with them????

Andy,
Not sure of your cultipacker....But I wish you the best on all your plantings! I'd 2nd what Luv2 said about the nitrogen. If your brassicas don't do so well or are consumed by mid Sept, don't be afraid to broadcast some annual rye as an adequate salvage job. Just keep it in the back of your mind so that you can at least have the good attraction for hunting season. It also won't hinder your clover plantings too much.

By the way...sportsmen for Bush!! ;)

Luv2,

We took your expensive advice and bought 200 pounds of 46-0-0 and 450 lbs of triple 19. We will be spreading it over the 3 fields that have the brassicas in them. My pocketbook is hurtin, but i do agree with you that the fertil. applic. were a little low the first time. There cannot be anyone in the state of Ohio that has bought as much fertilizer as I have for deer foodplots this year!!!!

Andy, I was going to suggest that you run the cultipacker up and down the fields then back and forth at a 90 degree angle to the first passes. That way, you get more seed to soil contact.I'm not sure about the cultimulcher. Somebody should be along shortly to answer your question. Good luck on your plantings and in your marriage.

Nothing wrong with using a cultimulcher, just don't put it down all the way were the teeth dig in. This would incorporate much of your seed too deep into the soil. I put it down to where the teeth just scratches the soil. I make only one pass and it works great.

My advice is free, it's the fertilizer that costs $$$.

I learned along time ago that there's not enough time to learn from all your own mistakes, you have to open minded enough to learn from the mistakes of others.

You will be happy you added the fertilizer.

Phew....i called to check on that and the teeth were up when he packed it. We should be good. Thanks WRuebs! And thank you all for the help and support. I really CANNOT wait for season to get here. This has been the funnest off season I ever had. I just love this food plot stuff!
