Public land around Ferndale (1hr)

I recently moved to Ferndale from Waterford and am looking for public land to scout for the upcoming hunting seasons (deer, duck, small game). I don't mind driving an hour or so but need something "relatively" close as I have a 4mo old baby and the times I'm able to get out will be few and far between. Any suggestions on public lands I should scout would be greatly appreciated!

Ortonville RA, HollyRA, Bald Mountain...
Lots and lots of places. Many will be the same as you would have sought from Waterford. DNR site lists them of course.

Anywhere within an hour of Ferndale, you will have to contend with crowds, but it is better than no place at all.
I lived for a while on Leroy near St James a number of years ago. Ferndale sure has changed since then.
