While fishing the lake last weekend I messed up the pull starting on my Merc 4 stroke, 15HP. First pull and she started up good but I had to shut down and move as the weeds were all over my Musky lures. Got to the South shore went to pull the cord and all I got was a ratchet sound or a stripping noise. The starting mechanism was not engaging. Pulled the top and noticed that the belt was moving when I pulled slow and the cord retracted but could not get it to engage. There went the Musky trolling. Anybody had this and what did it take to fix. I'm not too handy but am willing to try. Anyone with some advice would be appreciated.

try one of the rust penetrators like liquid wrench, never had any luck with wd 40, spray the area around the engagement cog and pull it and spray again, it should free up, gets a little sticky when old grease they put in starts to thicken in there.

I am pretty familiar with most of the merc style rewind starters but I do not know what one you have? any chance you could snap a pic. or toss us a serial number?

Thanks Steve and TONGA: Been kind of busy at work and had to get the serial number. It's a 2000, 15HP (4-Stroke) Merc, long shaft. Serial Number is OT169200. Appreciate the response. Looks like the weather is going to be ok and I would like to go after them Ski's.

wow that puppy is new,,,I can't say I have ever pulled one of those apart yet...it seems to be similar to other merc starters just maybe a little up-dated,
you should be able to pull her off as a unit by pulling the bolts around the outside,,,she should stay together as a unit (I hope lol)
once you get her off flip her over and have a look in the area of 11--16,,,this is the goods that should make the hook up to the crank when you pull the rope,,,I suspect you just lost a spring or broke a pawl....Like I said pull her off flip her over and slowly pull the rope a few times and you should have no problem finding the problem

TONGA: Thanks. Worked on it yesterday. Pulled the covers, jiggled and wiiggled and guess what. It's working. Have no idea what I did but I got it started, the cord retracted and I guess it caught. Much appreciate the drawing, it must of helped as I did not lose any parts.
