Well, all the talk of trolling plates got me thinking about my troubles. I have an older Johnson 15 hp on my boat. I use it for trolling, and it trolls down real well. The problem is when trolling at higher speeds. I have to hold the throttle. If I let go to net or fight a fish, my speed drops back to idle. Anyone have a way I can set the throttle speed for trolling and not have to constantly hold it? A couple hours of this is pretty hard on the wrist.

I have a 6hp that had the same problem. I beleive it is a safty feature so if you let go of the throttle at high speeds you will not loose control.
I removed my cover and removed a wire spring clip that was returning it back to idle position. I would take a pic to show you but the motor is up north.
Hope this helps.

BH ,

Wanted to post this yesterday but thought better of it anyway here goes.
In my long forgotten youth I had a Suzuki 850 motorcycle that I rode all over the place. Had the same issue of wrist fatigue and bought myself a motorcycle cruise control that was nothing more than a round clamp with a thumb controled lock and it fit right on the end of the throttle grip . when you were at desired speed you locked the clamp with the thumb lock. I don't see why this would not work with an outboard. I do not know if these " cruise controls" are still available in this age of sue happy , liability concerened manufacturers but I assure you this small plastic clamp worked great to lock the throttle in place. It was very inexpensive and did the job. Just an alternative idea for you to think about.

Also try stretching a piece of bicycle innertube over the throttle so half is on the throttle and half is on the arm, if it's tight enough it should keep the throttle from going back to the idle position.

I just love the innovations sportsmen will come up with! :D

After a little searching a buddy of mine found a mororcycle throttle lock that fit his 5o hp merc tiller. Works excellently.

I think this is the one he got, he had to do a couple of mods, but it took him less than two hours to install:

Thanks guys. Gave me some good ideas to run with. I like the throttle backing off while running, in case I am thrown from the boat, but sure would like to give my wrist a break while trolling, plus keep the dipsy from bouncing bottom when I am fighting/netting fish or setting lines.
