View Full Version : Looking at a new boat. Have a couple questions

Well it isn't a new boat...it is a 1978 Cruisers

It has been in my family since it was brand new. So I know it has been taken care of well.

However, it has been sitting dry for the better part of the last ten years in the Pole Barn. From what I've been told the Baffles are leaking from dry rot probably and it needs a new throttle cable.

What kind of money are we talking to replace baffles and a throttle cable?

Just looking for some thoughts.

Thanks

-Jim

Add a little extra information. It is an I/O Mercruiser outdrive. I belive it is a Chevy 308 power plant.

... my in-laws have a late '80's Larson Delta Sprotsman 215, in their barn. Been sitting there 2-3 years now. When they had it winterized last, they were told that the baffles/bellows needed replaced along with the water pick-up tube (I think). It has the 5.0L (305) power plant with a Mercruiser outdrive (think it is an Alpha 1 ... but not sure).

Kinda wondered why sixshooter would want a bigger boat  ..... but then I realized .... it must be to haul all those salmon he catches  ;)

What kind of outdrive is on it? If it's an OMC I would stay away from it do to the bad design of the thing.

I'm not familiair with "baffles". Your "bellows" are probably leaking. If thats what you're talking about, thats a maintanence item and well under $100 for parts. Twice that for labor. They go every 4-6 years. Throttle cable isnt bad. I had to pull a new one(actually a shift cable) in my boat when it was 3 years old. Parts are about $30 - $100.

I would drain all the fluids from the block, change the filters, refill fluids(oil, gas, coolant if its FWC, lower unit lube), and manually lubricate the engine before turning it over if its been more than 4-5 years since its been started.

I know its been in the family, but if I were going to put any real money into the boat, I would get a structural survey done if its been laid up that long. Depending on how it was laid up, there could be any number of problems..

Jimmy,

Get the boat! When you get it fixed up and in good order you can then decide if you want to keep it or sell it.

A boat like that deserves to be in the water somewhere!

Right, great advise, why would you want to do any research and make sure a boat is structuraly and mechanically sound BEFORE you dump a pile of money into it(and if their are ANY structural problems, A PILE is probably conservative). To even spend the money and time on bellows and a throttle cable for a boat that may not be sea worthy is just ludacris. Do your research first..

Jason,

Take a chill pill man and step down off that pedestal.

Jimmy happens to be a friend of mine and I think he has the wearwithall to make a sound decision. I am just trying to help him upgrade so I have a bigger boat to fish from at times!

Besides that, I never said not to do any research as you call it so stay off of my advice! :bash:

Not to worry preacher man Mr Adams.

The boat is in perfect shape.

And for 2500 bucks for the boat and all the gear...can't go wrong anyhow.

I'm just looking for some ideas on the Yes you are right the bellows.

Yeah and be nice to Catfish. He is a great friend of mine.

The only thing that boat hast that doesn't make it look brand new is a little sun fading on the dog house cushions and the red stripe around the rim is a little faded. Other than that you wouldn't even know it was as old as it is.

The thing has been in Dry storage with a roof over it for the past 8 years. And it has NEVER seen a winter outside.

It has been proffessionally winterized and maintained all of it's years of service.

So I'm not worried one bit about the structural capacities of the boat.

Thanks for the prices on stuff that is what I was thinking.

Where is it at Jim, Montague? If it is I know a guy that used to work on boats at Grand Isle and maybe I could talk him in to giving an opinion. Also picked up Prolong Lubricant line and will give you a can of fogging oil that you may want to put in and let it work before you attempt any turn over of the motor. Also don't forget I have those cannon planner boards. They are just sitting here going Jimmy, Jimmy, come and get me Jimmy. LOL. Can you say walleye?

Ray,
It is currently in Mears. In my Grandpa's Pole Barn. I think I have a guy that will hook me up too...Thanks though...And yes those boards would be sweet.

We should get together again Ray and do some more fishing....this time when they are biting...haha...

If all works out for me I will be a two boat owner.

Oh yeah. Going up tomorrow to get plates on the trailer and work on a date to get it to the mechanic.

I'll get some pics when I get it out of the barn.

Pictures as promised. So what if they are a little late.
Still have some minor projects to do on her though. I want to get rid of that Interphase 20/20 graph. And I have a couple Cannon Electric Riggers to mount off the back.

I also might add a track system instead of the rail mount tite loks but they will do for now.

I'm also going to add an AM/FM/CD to this boat somewhere in the next month.

And then I will see how much money I have left over and I might go with a mapping GPS or a new Graph...Not sure yet. I think I might just switch my Graph from my little boat back and forth for now.

No Steve I'm going to Keep Half Dozen on this one. I think what I might do is get some 3 inch letters and put Sixshooter on the sides.

But other than that. It is bad luck to change the name on a boat I hear.
