'Buck Wilder' author visits library

HOLLAND -- Combine reading, animation and the great outdoors together and get a mixture of fun as Traverse City author Tim Smith performs at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday at Herrick District Library.

Smith is the creator of best-selling children books, "Buck Wilder's Small Fry Fishing Guide," "Buck Wilder's Small Twig Hiking &Camping Guide" and the new "Buck Wilder's Little Skipper Boating Guide."

Smith is an outdoorsman, said Laura Jolly, marketer for Buck Wilder Books. He has spent a lot of time with his children outdoors and noticed many how-to outdoor guides were mainly text, she said. Smith wanted to create books that would teach how-tos, but with visuals. The character Buck Wilder was created to show kids how to participate in outdoor activities.

The Buck Wilder series is aimed at children ages 5 to 12. Books include many illustrations and are a fun way to learn about the outdoors.

Through his presentations and creative examples, Smith is motivational, Jolly said. He's a very animated, interactive person and involves the kids, she added. He has great stories to tell and loves to get kids excited about reading.

Smiths appearances will cap the library's highly successful summer reading program for children and young adults. More than 2,800 participants have signed up in this summer's book clubs, "Discover New Trails @ Your Library" for children and "Discover! Explore! Read!" for teens.
