Had a couple of hogs wander out of the woods down by the river the other morning, a 300# boar with 4"-5" choppers and a larger sow. Ms Lynn is tuning up the bow to go after them this week.
Long approach to a question, but the new Bass Pro Shop here in Orlando has a photo mural in the men's room of the largest boar ever killed. It was taken in Russia and weighed something like 1,100#. This thing looks like a rhino, a very ugly and mean rhino.
It's a haunting photo and I am drawn back to it every time I go there. OK, I'm maybe a little wierd but it's so compelling I just have to see it from time to time.
Just wondered if anyone else had seen it or if other BPS's have the photo and if anyone had any opinions. This thing is a monster and maybe a bit scary as I've seen what even a 300# boar can do to dogs and men.

I don't know much about wild boars, but 1100 # seems like 300-400 to much. Can anyone confirm this weight ? I could see a wild boar raised in captivity (game ranch) getting that big.

L&O,
Hope I didn't stretch this one, but , as I remember, it was well over 1,100#. I know, it sounds way too big, but it's just that, way too big.
Maybe it's a freak from Chernobyl fallout.
I'll be down there tomorrow and will get the info if no one else has it.
This isn't just another huge boar, this is THE huge boar.

Truly a big 'un, but the Russian boy was much bigger. Didn't get down to BPS today as anticipated, but maybe tomorrow as Ms Lynn has her pants in a wad about a new shotty gun although I have no clue why she needs another. I always thought it was a guy thing but she's into collecting and fiddling. Does anyone else have this problem? Cripes, maybe we all wish for the perfect woman. Young, beautiful and into the outdoors. Be careful what you wish for guys.

O town,

I know what you mean about the perfect woman. The only bad thing about it is that every time I want a new gun, or to go on a trip, it costs me double. I wouldn't have it any other way, and pitty those guys that have women that just don't understand.:p

HS,
You bet, and anniversaries, birthdays, Father's day and Christmas are the best. I always seem to get what I want without having dropped 1 darn hint. She just knows.
Downside is that right now she's down in a tree stand waiting for some mobile pork chops to walk by and I'm doing laundry.
Q: Has anyone checked out the BPS site for the boar pic? Think I will. You all gotta see this hog.

I just took a look at that Boar. Big sucker.

Did you Hoyt user's notice he used a bow of my choice. "Parker Feather Lite." :D :D :D
I bet you Matthew's guys will probably want to know why it took two shots.
No insults intended here just a little humorous fun.
Have a good one. :)

I have seen that picture in the men's room at BPS. You really cannot believe it until you see it. I am not sure I believe it even after seeing it. :) I

Slug,
Maybe that's why I keep going back, I can't believe it myself.
I emailed BPS administration today to see if they would make it available on the net, so maybe you all can see this bubba hog.
Lynn and I were 'howdyin' over the fence with our neighbor yester day and Bill and I got into talking about the pic, so now Ms Lynn has demanded to see it. We carefully instructed her on how to dress; butt length hair stuffed under a floppy hat, baggy clothes and shades. The funniest part was the lesson on how to pretend she was using the urinal. It was hilarious. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

The BPS thing is the world record Russian wild boar and weighed 1,164#. It was 'harvested' in Feb. of '99 in Russia.
Ms Lynn chickened out on the men's room thing.

Wow... 1,164 # !
Cute idea for Ms. Lynn to see the picture. Tell her that if she has any balls she'll do it.

She has plenty of balls, she just isn't wearing any, for which I will be eternally grateful.
She claims she would rather shoot her own than look at somebody else's. She's seen 2 boars in the last 2 days but nothing within bow range. We'll post a pic when she connects, and she will eventually.

921,
Ms Lynn is my wife who, since we moved back into the woods, has taken to the hunting and fishing thing with a vengeance.

I've looked at the pics again of both boars and I think the one in Weatherby's post is definitely larger and it might have some Russian in it but from what I can see of the bone thickness in the rear end, it's not much as Russians tend to have a smaller butt in relation to their fore and thinner legs.
I'm not an expert although I've taken enough of them, but a couple of friends, one who has hunted in Russia said the same.
Interested in the hair biopsy thing to see what is determined but many of our hogs down here show up with the Russian type hair although they probably haven't had any blood infusion in 400 years, if they ever did at all. Most are descended from the original Spanish blood that crossed with domestic hogs that escaped and turned feral.
In case any of you might be wondering why we are hunting hogs in June, they are considered a domestic animal and the property of whomever's land they are on at the time. We can hunt, catch, bait, shoo off or whatever at any time of the year. Kinda cool, but most of us pretty well manage the crop to ensure our kids and theirs will have a steady supply of pork and excitement. These ain't barnyard pets. They have a severe attitude when cornered or pressed and their choppers are like razors. Anything that routinely kills and eats big cottonmouths and diamondbacks has my respect.

They have become such a problem at Myakka River State park (south east of Sarasota, FL) that they have contracted with ?? to reduce the population in the park. They are way over populated and are a nusance, tearing up the trails. When we were there in January this year we saw live traps on most of the trails we walk.

You can see them on the shore of the lake most any morning. I would have thought that the gators would keep the population undercontrol by the lake.

Gators are grossly overrated on their voracity and underrated on their intelligence. Unless there are extreme circumstances ie. starvation, they won't tackle anything that might be a difficult dinner.
There was a young girl down here that was killed by a gator recently and her body was abandonded by the gator because he couldn't or wouldn't eat the body. Sad, but an exception.
We lead the nation in shark and gator attacks because we have a bunch of both. Hogs can and will attack and eat gators and were one of the biggest problems with the rebound of the gator from the endangered list.
