Volunteers carry load on rail trails in Michigan

You may recall that two weeks ago, in a column about a proposal to create a state tax checkoff for state parks, I wrote that volunteer labor will play an increasingly large role in the upkeep of Michigan state parks. Right or wrong, it's the way things are.

You're right, it IS the way things are.

That's why it's so important to belong to MMBA or IMBA - or both.

MMBA members make and maintain hundreds of miles of trails in Michigan. And much of these trails are dual use - hikers use them too. I've done several trail days at Potto, Mayberry, and Pontiac Lake.

It's like you're either part of the problem or part of the solution. You can continue to ride, use or abuse trails, litter, contribute to erosion, etc. or you can help remedy some of these things and make the trails nicer for you to ride on yourself.

Nice thing about the MMBA is we don't have to fill pot holes. Whackin trees up with chainsaws beats road repair anyday.
