That would depend a lot on your unit but I have found mine to be quite accurate when compared to my truck's speedometer.

More GPS accuracy information than you'll know what to do with... http://www.edu-observatory.org/gps/gps_accuracy.html

I believe that GPS is very accurate. But in a boat, you've got to remember that the speed indicated is "over ground" speed. If you were headed into a strong current, your GPS speed would indicate your speed from point A to point B but your speed through the water would be greater. (because you're headed into the current) The opposite would be true once you turn around and head downstream with the current. Therefore using a GPS to gauge slower trolling speeds would not really be accurate due to the current but your "over ground" speed would be very accurate.

toots,
I did a quick search and found some reasonable info. Looks like you can expect between 0.1mph and 0.5mph accuracy.

I have found it to be extreemly accurate for speed.
My son recently flew in from California and turned it on during the flight (maybe not good) put it near the window and got 538 mph! Wow, it even recorded at that speed. I heard they are accurate up to 700 mph.......
I cant imagine why there would be any barrier to the upper end of speed accuracy. Mine reads its top speed ever as a whole 212 mph, and that was a seriously fast fly in trip......:O

Thanks for all your comments. We took the boat and trailed it at different speeds, all under 30 mpg. We found the GPS tobe within .2 to.4 for accuracy. No, we did pull any cranks. thanks again. toots
