i haven't been up to marquette in a few years....did that flooding a few years back ruin the 2 rivers the dams broke on, or are they making a comeback? Thats the weird thing about river fishing up there, you can know a river likethe back of your handand then one spring with heavy melt off can change everything around.

The Dead River for trout and lake ran fish seems to be in a poor state. When I walked down to tourist park there is no spawning gravel. There also isn't much of a river. I don't know what they fish do when their habitat has been changed beyond regonition. You can actually sight fish this river now! Carp, Chocolay, YellowDog, and all others seem to be in great shape. I don't fish them daily but I do annually since 14 years ago. I use to fish them all daily when I was living in Marquette & Gwinn.
Beyond the Dead river what was the other one that got ruined?

as i recall it was just the 2 dams on the dead river system. with the spring runoff and the rain that year i'm sure most rivers were affected to a lesser extent...Have you heard? Are they gonna rebuild or are they gonna try to restore the dead river to a more free flowing status?

I've been trying to follow it. Last I hear there were 3 options. Rebuild to make exactly like it was. Rebuild to keep the river the way it is now but to get the power plant at tourtist park back on line. Third option was to leave it they way it is and tear down the plant. WEll the last option is the most expensive...so they claim. If they return it to the old way I think they are going to upset some people. The state, city, county dumped a bunch of money into habitat around the damaged areas, mostly tourist park area. They planted grasses, trees, etc. I even heard they were going to bring in spawning gravel. WEll what a waste if they convert the river back to where it was. However, The way it was, was great it made for one heck of a fishery. Dam if the do & dam if they don't!
None of the river were harmed by that years run off. I fished mjany that year with success.

I hear that P.M. with the rivers you plan on hitting. Most this time of year are a waste of time. Maybe I can help.

Lake run fish can actually get a lot farther up ot to the forrestville basin, but all the other dams have been really keeping the river at an irregular flow. One day up, one day a trickle.Would be great if they could remove all the damns but there is way to many property owners on hoist basin. You can still catch 20-30 sub legal wallyes everynight fishing in hoist, oh yay

Well good luck to you. The Yellow Dog did not fish well last year at this time. Unlike previous years anyway. But what a river. The Dead? I can't say because of the reasons mentioned.
