HH,
I haven't tried them yet, but have some on order. I can just about guarantee they are better than those straps! I watched the Summit DVD that came with my Copperhead X4 stand last night, and they showed how to use the stirrups. Sure looked easy!
I'll let you know when I get them.

Myself and two others that have the Summit Viper will also be ordering them! Those straps suck! The new system looks much much better and they sure can't be worse!
Bryon, as soon as you get them I expect a full report....same day please! LOL!! :D

I wish it had a better picture on the site. It is hard to get an idea of how exactly it looks with your feet in it. It looks like your legs would be further spread apart. anybody else get that feeling? I don't mind the stock straps perse' but it is kinda pain to squat in full fatigues.

Banditto,
Check out the picture at Bass Pro Shops site (http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.SceneSeven?hvarTextId=55046&hvarSourceName=images2/78500/78646.jpg&hvarType=0&hvarLinkEnabled=false). Enlarged, it's pretty clear. It doesn't look uncomfortable to me. It does look like you'd have better control over the platform, though. I'll let you know when I get them!
BTW, I'm putting these on a Viper XLS bought 3 years ago.

I actually like my feet spread out a bit on the platform, just feels like I have better control. The squatting and then trying to get the back strap over your heel that Banditto mentioned is the main reason I hate them and I have to tightened the heck out of them to feel secure. I'm hoping these solid units give me that secure feeling with easy access. Being "height challenged" :D No not short, anything that makes me feel more secure is a plus!!
Im glad I read this. I usually never venture to the archery forum...i mainly use the habitat forum.
Do you guys know if these will work for my Cobra Climber too?
How much are they?
thanks in advance,
andy

Yes it will work with the Cobra as it uses the same base.
Cool that picture explains everything. I am ordering a set too. I was afraid I might bump them and make noise but it looks like it should work out perfectly as they angle backwards. Thanks for the info

I have tried them out on my Summit Python. They are 10x better than the old strap system. No bending and tightening straps!! The other nice thing is that they are adjustable up and down the rail so if you are going to a bigger boot for late season, you can adjust the straps up the rail so that you'll have more room for your boots.
Watch for the other tree stand companies to start copying Summit on this one!

Those new straps do look neat,,,Just a word of caution for those who own a older Summit stand with the closing doors for the cable's. Couple years ago I was climbing down and the door opened up and the cable came out of the lower stand, I had to kick the stand part off my boot and send it crashing to the ground then I hung on to my seat part as long as I could, arms fully extended and unable to do a pull up to try and get back into the chair due to panic and exhaustion I guess plus all in darkness..... well arms became numb and no longer could hold on........All i can say is Glad I had my safety strap on!!! Luckily my brother was hunting same woods and used his climber for my rescue.
Check those doors and use pliers to crimp them together so they close hard.

Does anyone know what stores are gonna carry these straps or do you have to order on line? I have a Gander Mountain store just down the road from work. Looks like a great concept. I've always hated trying to get into those straps with my heavy camo on.

they're only $20 plus like $3 for shipping from Cabela's or Summit's (http://www.summitstands.com) website

I just ordered my pair for my summit viper from Bass Pro Shops - $24.95 after shipping. Always hated pulling those staps over the boots also...

Ya I think mine was $24.95 or $25.95. Either way it will be a small amount of money for a huge gain.

I got my stirrups from BassPro in Auburn Hills last week. Tried them out this weekend at home. I have to disagree with Holzy - they are at least 20X better than the old straps! ;)
Seriously, they are a lot better than the straps. If you haven't yet, get yourself a pair.

I got mine today.
I like the idea, but hate the wing nut thing--what happens when it loosens and it falls apart when your 30ft up. Also I hate the idea of the elastic band with the open metal hook, something to catch your pant leg on.
I am going to use locktited nuts instead of the wing nut, and also crimp the elastic band hook down with a hog casing crimper.

Banditto,
Easy there...that's a lot of hate for one short post. If you check the wingnuts, I think you'll find that they are nylok nuts, not the standard wingnuts. Should have no chance of unexpectedly loosening at height.
Depending how you set up the hook, you should be able to keep it away from your pant leg. Another option, use pliers to close the hook into a loop.
Anyway, let us know how you like them once you try them for a bit.

Byron

Byron, ya that hog casing crimp is what you are saying. I am still going to get rid of the wing nuts.
I can already setup up in near silence and climb 20 feet in less than 3 minutes from start to finish and this is going to cut that time in half.
I have to idiot proof everything being I tend to act like an idiot under pressure.

ArrowFlinger,
I suggest you call Bass Pro ahead of time to make sure they have some in stock for you. I've been in there several times in the past couple weeks, and they never had them in stock. I had them do a "turbo order", which is an order from another store or the warehouse. This takes a couple days, so calling today might not be a bad idea. Their number is (248)209-4200. I'm not 100% certain they can do a turbo order over the phone, but I think they should. While you have them on the phone, you may just ask if they have some in stock, and ask them to hold some for you, if so.
Good luck,
Byron

Well, I ordered a set yesterday. I was so fed up with the old straps that I was ready to trade in the climber for a ladder stand. Ordered mine from Bass Pro and they were in stock through catalog order, $24.95 I believe is what I paid for them.

How do you guys keep the cable from ratteling while your climbing.
Banditto
07-28-2004, 08:21 PM
Strange I never noticed it rattling before. How large a diameter tree you climb? I use mine 90% of the time and am on my 2nd set of cables already. I might even buy another one (just the top) for rifle hunting. Are your clips tight--you can pinch them to make them tighter.
Is yours an XL edition?

I bought Mine last year fromn Cabelas. Did they sell the xl last year?
Usually they only clink if I am climbing a knoby tree and the cables are hitting things on the way up.
Yeah my clips are tight.
I just thought maybe you guys had some tricks for that
Banditto

Ya the XL was sold for the past 2 years, with the non-XL before that. I guess I have to pay attention next time I use mine because I have never really noticed a noice from the cables. Maybe try not to rush up the tree, take baby steps.
One thing to tell ya though, my stand started to squeak really bad. It turns out the teeth that grab the tree got worn in a certain way. I called Summit and they said to file the edges. I thought they were full of beans, but low-and-behold it worked. Had to do it twice so far. It does a high pitch squeak when it needs to be done.

The cables clink a little inside the bar of the stand when I am climbing on some trees.
I do try and take my time with it.
It's still my favorite stand though.

I have an older climber that weighs about 200lbs (at least thats what it feels like when carrying it). and that one is a bit noiser going up and down the tree. My summit is quiet, at least I have never noticed any noises coming from the cables. I try to climb up the tree slow and try to take as few steps as possible to get up and down without overdoing it. My guess would be loose cable doors or the rubber coating may have worn away from the cable causing the cable to hit against the climber and making a louder noise? Thats my guess. My other stand is loud because there is no rubber coating, its just steel against steel.

Ahh! Maybe that is what is wrong with Roberts stand too. That happened to me, that is why I replaced the cable. It should be a tight fit when it is right. My cable can't move at all inside the tube.
You may be able to repair it with shrink tubing if you could find a large enough diameter shrink tube. Like the type they use for house electric supply lines.
Summit sells shrink tubing just for its cables. Im sure there is other options that would work.

First of all, this is my first post but I have been viewing posts for nearly 2 years now. Great site and very informative!
My question is has anyone else had problems with installing the new stirrups? The problem I ran into is the fastener will not line up with the other side of the stirrup because there is an interference with the upright bar. It seems that the stirrup is not deep enough for the upright bar or the upright bar is too thick. When the stirrup is installed and I look through the holes, there is enough interference to where the threads wont line up with the "nut" side of the stirrup.
I e-mailed Summit but have not received a response as of yet (3 days). I was thinking about filing down the stirrup to make it work but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this.
Thank you in advance for the response.

Can one of you post a piture of your climber with the stirup on it? The photo from base pro makes these look rather bulky. Do these move out off the stand when your hunting or do your boots hit them? Does the climber still assemble to pack out?

Rob, are you bolting it to the correct bar?
