Went just north of the blue water bridge yesterday evening, obviously just to practice casting, cause the fish definately were not biting... I never knew they did this, but while we were standing there, a carp, a good 15 incher, jumped completely out of the water! Came out head first and went back in head first. My wife missed it, so she thought I was nuts... about 20 minutes later, it did it again, this time she saw it too.. At least I had entertainment....

What you saw is fairly common. It's what carp do. I can't tell you why, but they routinely jump completely out of the water. I was on another river last year and had one of those asian variety (aka big-head carp) jump into the boat. It was about 8-10 pounds. Imagine hitting one of those (or larger) while pushing 40 mph on a PWC!:yikes:

Well, that was a first for me. I haven't gone back yet, I might tonight to try some more if the weather stays nice. It sure made my wife get a screwy look on her face.

Check out these links. They explain the danger these asian breeds are posing to our resources (and humans).

Last week, my brother caught a few "bugle-nosed bass" weighing 16# and 18# on an inland lake. They can be a lot of fun to bring in. They tend not to jump as much on the line (unlike bass and muskie).

Was this a great lakes river??? Asian carp should not, at this point, be in the great lakes or its rivers....

He's from Peoria, I can only assume Illinois, where that would make pretty good sense :tdo12:

The only thing keeping these Illinois River fish from invading our Great Lakes and rivers is an "electronic barrier" of unknown effectiveness in Chicago.

Ummm... I live in Port Huron. :D So that would have been the St. Clair River, right at the mouth of Lake Huron.

Anyone have any close up pictures of these things? I'd like to know if this is what I saw or not. It looked like a carp, but I knew there are a ton of different ones in that family. I used to snorkle in the St. Clair river all the time, and about 2 or 3 years ago, I was able to grab onto one that was about a foot and a half long. He pulled me through the water for a little bit before I let go. At the time, I thought it was fun, till I ran into a "school" of about 20 of them. When they get spooked, they care which direction they go or what they run into. Knocked my mask off and just about knocked me unconscious.
