i think you're out of luck with the inland lakes in st. clair county. that county up through huron county pretty much don't have any inland lakes..... pretty much only streams and lake huron.

That really bites.. There is a little pond off of Lapeer Rd. in port huron that the DNR made some nice floating docks and a walkway around it for people to fish at.. The problem is, it's a little too public. I went there this week after not going there for about 3 years and it was really sad. Bottles, plastic worm containers, and a whole lot of garbage was strewn all over the shore and in the water. It was pretty sad. The weed growth is insane, and the biggest fish I caught was 3 inches, and that was a largemouth. And I haven't really heard of anything great coming out of some of the smaller rivers through there...

I've never tried any gravel pits... How would you know if there were any fish in them? (or than just going and spending a few hours possibly looking like a moron. )
Ask the owners, while you are asking for permission to fish. As stated by MSU, the only pits I can think of are on private land.

aaron,
I grew up in PH and still have family there. Trust me, except for a few gravel pits and borrow ponds along the freeways, inland lakes as such don't exist in St. Clair County. There are some borrow ponds along I-69 and I-94 that have some good fishing. Got some of the biggest perch of my life ice fishing on one just outside town. We found out about those while snorkeling in the pond in the summer. But before you ask.....private property, and it's long since changed hands. I have no idea who owns it now.
The pond you referred to in your post is called 40th st. pond. I was fishing that thing back in the 70's before it was developed at all. I understand from my relatives there that it's now turned into kind of a party spot for locals....too bad. There used to be tons of small pike in it. The DNR planted them in an attempt to clean up the small panfish. There were a couple of years that the DNR stocked trout in that pond if you can believe that. I caught some nice browns back then, but again that was about 1979, and to the best of my knowledge that stocking ended long ago.
There are some good streams to fish in the county however. Obviously the St. Clair River is good for walleyes, and you can shore fish in town, or several places along it. Along the golf course in Marysville has been good for years, and based on other postings I see, it must still be. As far as other streams, I used to love fishing Mill Creek out towards Avoca, and had a ball with smallies. Used to wade it and throw small spinners. Also fished the Black River in many places, including behind Ford Dam....I knew the owners back then. Lots of fishing opportunities for streams.
My advice if you want inland lake fishing is to get in your car and head to Lapeer Co. Seriously, that's what we did. My brothers and I fished many lakes over that way with a canoe, and had a ball. There are tons of lakes over in the Lapeer SGA and vicinity that are a lot of fun. If you want more ideas on that area, pm me.
St. Clair County requires you to get creative. Yeah there are a lot better places, but there are opportunities if you're willing to put in the effort.
