Nut, make sure you are out there from 5:30 till 7:30 in the am as this is always a good time for diamond sides. Do you have that bait we talked about last month? Try that and let me know. If it wasn't for this reunion you know I would be right there with you.
Go after some other bait we talked about and try them along with the chubs and any big Minnows you are able to aquire. With this stable weather and the temps holding you should do well.
I ordered some more hooks that will fill the bill they should be in for next Wed. the 21st
Good Luck!
Sturge

Big Bob what about the 21st?

Looks like I'm working the boat races on the river this weekend but I do want to give this another go. How long does the season run for?

To answer my own question, I checked the DNR site and it looks like the season for LSC and the SC River is July 16th thru Sept. 30th. So who's going to PM me with this secret bait? :p  :)

I've never tried fishing for sturgeon in Michigan. Hoping to this year. Does anyone know where the closest place to Davison is to obtain a sturgeon tag?
Does the tag cost anything? Could my fishing buddy pick one up for me? or do you have to go in person and show your fishing lisence? The fishing guide and the DNR website are not very clear on this.

This is me last month near Vancouver. Cant wait to land my first home state dinosuar.

Nice one!!!!! Every time out the past 2 weeks, I've been seeing 3 or 4 jump that are about that size. Today is the opener, I got my tag at bluewater. All that was needed is your drivers license number and name, dont know if someone can pick one up for you or not.....

Can anyone give me general idea of where to find sturgeon? I'm not trying to move in on anyones spot, but should I be looking for them near the south end of the river or further up?

ImARedneck and I fished for sturgeon early Sunday for a few hours without a hit. Ended up moving down to the pond and trolling for musky. Caught two musky and a northern but not much size to them. All three around 30 inches.

Has anyone asked if you need the tag if you plan on catch-and-release fishing only?

dj,
The way I understand it you need the tag to fish for them regardless. They are free however.Good luck if you go.

Might want to ask Boehr for clarification on this. I was under the impression that you only needed it to possess a fish. I fished them a couple times last year and did not have a tag but I had no intention of keeping one.

Anglers need to possess a tag when targeting lake sturgeon (prior to angling).

That is from the DNR's website. I would imagine that they want to know how many people are fishing for them. They take your drivers lisc. number when you get your tag. Maybe they plan to send out some kind of survey to find out hours fished for sturgeon and how many were caught.

Oops! Looks like I'll be making a trip to the end of South River Road (DNR Office) before I give it another shot

Does anyone know if the new Lakeside Annex at Sundog Marina on South River Rd has the tags? I'm not sure about the office hours for the MDNR office at Harley.

They are on my list of things to try. I've never caught one although I may have had one on a tube for a while in the shipping channel a few seasons ago. It just slowly swam into the current and kept going. It didn't fight like any of the big muskies I've hooked in the summer.

It was somewhat similar to a musky in cold water that doesn't know it's hooked yet on light tackle. It just kept swimming along the bottom upstream until I got impatient (I was in a bass tournament at the time) and started putting more and more pressure on it. Instead of changing its course or doing anything different, it just kept swimming and my line broke.

I never moved it off the bottom or got it to react any other way in the few minutes I had it on. Who knows. I've had them swim under my boat up north at Burt and Mullett, but fishing for them on purpose would be a new experience. If I get a chance, it will probably be later this summer.

One of my friends has filmed them on underwater camera before (and recorded them - a school of monsters in 65 feet of water with a 2+ smallie a littles ways beyond them next to a small junk pile in 57 feet of water...) in the North Channel, so he can probably put me in the ballpark if I get a chance.

A. fish on the waxing moon

B. use fresh bait

C. fish where the fish are.

D. Fish the top of the hole on a waxing moon, fish the back of the hole on a waning moon.

A Sturgeon will jump like a Tarpon if you sting them when you set the hook
The more force you put on a Sturgeon the more he will fight. You can set the hook into a 80#er and hold on for a hour with six pound but put the meat to
him and all hell can break loose. In the past I have had three, threehundred yard spools of 25 pound disappear and never turn whatever was on the line.
Went to the bitter end and the famous pang would sound and I lost, Mr. Ugly won. I hope all of you can enjoy the fight these fish will throw if hooked and the fish knows who's boss.
Does anyone know where we can find some spottails? I like these better than any other bait on the market.
Good Luck and I will see you on the river starting next week.
