This one took a little while to figure out but once I did it made me a little sick and we did turn it over to the DNR but they had little interest in it.
We found this floating free a while back and all that was exposed was the top of the frame, it was right flush to the water and hardly noticeable. At first everyone thought that it was some kind of fish trap but to me it just didn’t have that fish trap look and the hole that you can see in the side was in my mind made by an animal trying to get into it. This is because of the claw marks that are all over the bottom of the hole in the wood.
So what is it?
Well after a few weeks it hits me like a TON of carp right in the face. It’s a fish holding box to cheat in a fish tournaments. As most of us know most of these tournaments have big prizes and It’s a known for a fact that bass fisherman will fish hard the day before to “find” the fish.
Well let’s see a dishonest person catches a few nice ones and drop them off in the holding pin only to be picked up the next day to be added to the others that they caught.
I would love to think that I’m wrong but I have a bad feeling that I’m right. :fish:

certainly looks like a fish box.... used em on a fly-in trip as a livewell of sorts so you wouldn't have to clean the fish right away. seems like this one has some "customizing" done. Could be an honest fishbox, but i'd say its equally possible that its someone's cheating box. I could see some prick putting fish in it, submerging it, and marking it on the gps..... ugh.

To me it looks like a bait box to keep fresh minnows at the the dock and not need an aerator.

My guess would be a fish box/bait box that broke loose from someones dock. I guess it could be a cheaters box but fish/bait boxes are pretty common for people that live on the water.

I could see it being a bait box never thought of that!
But the box was a easy good two-foot by two-foot by three…is that still a bait box????

I'm with Esox on this one as I have seen the same kind of box at the marina's tied off to the dock near fishing boats. They dip the minnows at night with a light and dump them in this kind of screen cage.I was also told that it's not legal without a permit.

I grew up on a small lake. Half the houses had one of those tied to the dock. You'd fill it with bluegills and when you had enough you'd clean them. If you kept it under the dock and out of the sun they'd live several days in the fish cage.

I agree with Beave and Gone Fishing, looks to be a fish holding pen. I see alot of them around here. Go fishing, put your catch in, when you have enough, fillet and have a nice meal!

Looks sorta like where the "whopper" prize walleye fish was stored before it was entered into the Algonac Pickerel tournament. :bash: That fish had it's fins and tail all torn up which was obvious to me and many others that complained but the officials let it slide. Hmmmmm....... I've even known a few old timers "cheaters" that participate in that type of B.S. I quit fishing that tournament a few years back when the "good 'ol boys" that ran it retired. They'd never let that ol' beat up fish get entered. Oh well.......at least I'm workin' an honest program which is all that matters to me. And the guys I hang with do the same. Good luck out there fellas....... :coco:

Thats a fish holding box, people use them to hold fish until they want to clean. They have been using them forever on Harsens Island. I think the Polish invented it. It only stands to reason, a polock would use it because I am one. I dont think that they would use it for tournament fishing, because it is made of wood and floats, but you never know.

Lawnboy- It wasn't too long ago a guy in the FLW tour was accused of using one of these in a competition. I know he was kicked out of the league, but they never said what for, but the rumors said he was using a fish box.
Whatever it is it looks "fishy":fish:
