I have a 17' Monarch that I need a good anchoring system for. A 20 lb Navy doesn't do the job & I do not want to buy a 30 lb Navy. I bought a Chene anchor & I think it is going back, it doesn't look big enough to hold a float tube. Is the Danforth fluke style anchor the best (only?) way to go?

Try one of these. It's the best anchor I have ever used. The 12 lber will hold you in most conditions but the 18 will hold you in anything you care to be out in.

PB ,
Please remember that your hook ( anchor ) is only one part of the equation .
scope of your anchor line is a HUGE factor in getting a good bite and anchor set!
Almost all boaters do not use enough line as the reccomened ratio is 7 ' of anchor line for each foot of depth. Thus if you are trying to anchor in 10 FOW
ideally you need 70 " of anchor line . while I realize this is not always possible ,
( most people do not carry 700 ' line to anchor in 100 FOW ) it is the reccomened ratio 7 to 1 . Another big helper is to run the first 10 ' of anchor line as chain , I personally like the plastic coated chain its easy on the gelcoat
this anchor chain keeps the line down on the bottom (laying flat ) and helps your anchor bite in more readily . Last but not least I do like a danforth style
anchor couple this with 10' of heavy chain and the proper amount of scope
(length of anchor line let out before trying to get your hook-up) and setting the hook becomes much much easier;)

I have a 17 ft Tracker and this is what I use, never had a problem holding.

A decent 13 lb. Danforth type anchor with some chain as big nic suggested should hold that boat even in a current like the Detroit or St.Clair with no problem. You could probably even go lighter if you wanted. Navy anchors don't dig as well. And the chain makes a world of difference.
