I have a Fish Hawk 840 that I am starting to have problems with. The readings at the ball are all over the place. I have replaced battery after battery, adjusted the gain and still get erratic readings at the ball. The surface reading is constant but the reading at the ball is not.

Is there some adjustment I am over looking? I have no manual on the unit so I need some assistance from anyone who has experienced this problem, thanks in advance, Bill.

How deep were you fishing?? When I use an 8# ball, fish deep, the down speed and temp will be way off, if even readable. I think that may be from the probe being blown back far enough that the receiver transducer can't get a good signal. Temperature readings will sometimes say 20 deg(Hmmm..Ice?) You might want to try slowing down a little to see if the numbers improve, then use a heavier ball. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem when I got mine. I had a problem keeping water out of the probe. Sent the whole unit back to Fish Hawk and they put new guts and a different cap on my probe. They said that some of the problem could've been from storing it with the cap on in the cuddy which can get quite hot at times. Have been removing the battery and storing with the cap off for the last couple of years and it has worked great since. I know people who store theirs with the battery in and cap on in the off position and have no trouble with theirs. The people at Fish Hawk were a pleasure to work with very prompt service.

I am going to do a shut down of all the electronics for interference as well as the cap thing. Will be at the DAS Big fish quest this weekend so I will have pleny of time on the water to experiment. Thanks for all the responses, Bill.

I think I found my problem. I shut down my fishfinder while trolling and the fish hawk starting working better. I must be getting interference from the unit or the transducer. Can someone tell me where their fish hawk tranducers are mounted in relation to the fishfinder transducer?
Mine are next to each other currently.

I have mine on the opposite side as my depthfinder and they seem to get along well. That might be your problem.

Just a thought,.... I was having the same problem as you are with my Cannon Speed & Temp.

Try adjusting the angle of your hull mounted receiver/transducer a bit and see if it starts to register any better for you. ;)

(PS. I would also relocate it to the other side of the boat away from the sonar transducer do to the crossing of signals.)

I have just got done moving my transducer to the other side of the stern. I hate drilling more holes so I hope this works. Going to Oscoda this weekend, will let you know the results.

Well relocating the transducer did the trick. The rep from Fishhawk called me Saturday and said I should also run a independant ground directly to the battery which I will do.

CONGRATS ON YOUR FIX!!

if I remember correctly,... on my Speed n' Temp the instructions said to run the power directly from the battery (which I did) so as not to pick up and interfearance from the other electronics on board. ;) :)
