GRAYLING - Because the state and Grayling officials are spending nearly $1 million to keep pollutants out of the AuSable River, the city may take further steps to protect it.
The Grayling City Council is considering an ordinance regulating storm water runoff, to keep silt and other pollution out of the river.
The Department of Environmental Quality awarded the city $758,000 in Clean Michigan Initiative funds to retrofit the city's storm sewer system. The city is matching the project with $127,000 in local funds.
The city will use natural methods such as rain gardens, which are landscaped areas where storm water is collected and allowed to re-enter the ground, and retention basins to help filter the runoff.
As part of continued efforts to keep pollutants out of the AuSable's pristine water, the ordinance would require businesses to use similar on-site measures to control storm water.
"The river is the reason that Grayling exists and it is still a large part of our local economy," Grayling City Manager Allen Lowe said.
A public hearing on the ordinance will be held July 12.
