I was fishing on the Muskegon river last night, just below the croton dam and I caught a dark fish, almost black with red behind the gills and bumps on his head. I caught some before but don't know what it is. I looked on DNR site but nothing there. Has the shape of a trout, is it just a coloring for a young one? Told some friends and they thought it sounded like something that should be killed (they were kidding). :p Anyone know?

Good pike bait if it is what I'm thinking. Chub

no, it was darker, pretty much black and red patches right behind the gills. The bumps on its head were probably around 8 maybe 10 and white like it had pimples. They weren't sharp but hard.

That pic doesn't look alot like the fish I caught either. The ones I got were darker and had the bumps on their heads.

yeah, its a creek chub, some people call them horned dace, or hornyhead chub. Quite possibly could be the fish ya caught. They are strange looking. Their coloration changes with the season (breeding and non-breeding) and varies some from stream to stream also.

it was pretty weird looking, was thinking if it was any bigger it might be a "me or him" situation. ;)

Pike bait, will have to remember that. Is there a size limit on chub then?

My thoughts to. Chub :fish:

I would catch a few while trout fishing on the Muskegon river. Some of them got to be a good size.

Yea, we used to catch them all the time in small creeks. some got pretty big and had stripes on them like perch. We called them Stone rollers.
