Last Thursday my wife went out to my fathers 40 acres to burn some papers in a burn barrel he has out there. She said the bugs where bad buzzing around while she tried to keep them away from her head and face she sat on a slid to the swing set that was out there. She covered her face with her hands and sat for a few minutes and went to swat away the bugs from her face and hit her hands together making a clapping sound. She looked up as she heard something close by moving and saw a large Black Bear only 10 feet from her turning and running away from her.

I heard the phone ring and picked it up to the sound of my wife’s voice like she just got done running ten miles saying, Bear, Big Bear. I calmed her down and asked her to tell me again what she said, Big Black Bear, I asked if she had seen it coming or even heard it and she said I heard something moving around but thought it was just squirrels playing.

The problem I have with this my family and all the kids in the whole family spend time out their at the cabin off and on in the summer, cook outs. We knew there was a bear in the area but never had it come that close to anyone and this is the first time it has been seen up close like this. last year in the fall a bear killed a dog not far from the cabin about a mile away, behind a house I don't think anyone shot that bear and could be the same one.

Do you think the DNR should be called or should we wait to see if we draw a tag and just keep the kids out of the area?

What would you do?

With kids, I would call the DNR. It sounds like Mr. bear is getting used to human scent and/or hungry. Better safe than sorry and they may give you some ideas to keep him away or trap and move. Good luck

If you can get some pictures( if its safe )

rrbuckmaster,

That was my thought also is the kids. I know that we only go out a few times a year but the idea of "what if". I would'nt want them to kill the bear but relocate it to a different area.

trout,

I put in for one but I got a tag last year, so I don't know if that will hold me back this year or not, with the points and all. If he/she sticks around and I don't get a tag I know where I can find a hunter ( MS).:D

I'm going to try and get some photos and video of it I can sit in the cabin and take them, I would like to see just how big it is.:)
