In 1997 3 men were arrested for attempting to sell the remains of 600 pound moose calf they poached on Sugar Island in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After posting the bond set by the court, one of the defendents, Douglas Clinton, failed to report for his court date, with his wearabouts unknown.

Recently the Southeast Bowhunters chapter of safari Club International was notified that Clinton was being held in California for a unrelated charge, through a national registry of captured fugitives. The only problem is that the DNR would not extridite him, due to lack of funding.

So (SCI) Hired two Conservation Officers to fly out there and get him. Can you imagine the look on the guys face when two CO's showed up in California with a one way ticket back to Michigan for him. It was the first extridition by the DNR for a wildlife-related crime since the 1960's.

Now that he is back he was sentences to:

$1000 fine
$250 Court Costs
$100 Atorney costs
$1500 moose restitution
Hunting privialges til 2004
His firearm
and his 40 acre parcel on sugar island that he used as surety to secure his release from jail

As a Hunter Education instructor from New York State I applaude your people for not letting this scum bag get away. These are people that give all hunters a fowl taste in our mouths . I again congradulate the group that sent to ECO'S on a trip to California.

WHAT!!!!!
NO jail time ...and only 250$ in court costs.
we definatly need stiffer fines and a positive jail sentence- say 1 to 3 years,at the very least.

Ah yes, Lady Justice. If I were her I might wield a little bigger hammer but we have seen justice at last.

Thank you SCI.

BroncBuster~ Actually he was sentenced to 365 days in jail (90 days to be served) credit for 76 days time served and the balance to be suspended on payment of fine & cost. So basically no additional time, What a joke.............The other part that bugs me is that he was ordered to pay $1000 for for extradition costs to the DNR who did'nt pay for the extridition, SCI Did. Our hopes is they will bank the Money for the next extradition.....yea right.
