Lakes and spelling bees: ‘Autochthonous’ has meaning to lake managers

TRI-LAKES — When 14-year-old David Tidmarsh of South Bend won the National Spelling Bee on June 3, he did so with a 13-letter word in the lexicon of aquatic biology and lake management.

With slow, deep and deliberate breaths, Tidmarsh correctly pronounced each letter of the word “autochthonous” and captured the top prize of $17,000.

Although not a household word, even for most biologists, autochthonous — pronounced “aw-TOK-thuh-nuhs” — is an adjective and means indigenous or native.
