Fished a small 75 acre lake in Pickney Saturday and noticed alot of dead carp on the shoreline. Has anyone ever seen this before? We notice alot of them on the top of the water that I assumed they were spawning. The people that live on the lake say they've never seen that many dead carp before. they have seen fish die offs before, but it's always been early spring after ice out.
On the up side my brother and I caught about 40 nice bluegill, one perch, one crappie.

I have know idea if this is the cause, but I read something about a panfish dieoff around here...maybe similiar.
The bioligist said that the water warmed quickly causing lots of weed growth earlier than normal. The panfish moved up shallow to spawn in the warm, weed filled water. At about the same time, we had about 10 days of straight overcast weather which caused the weeds to consume more oxygen than they made lowering the oxygen level in the shallows enough to suffocate the fish. Now, I would think the fish would just move off the beds and back to deeper water, but I'm certainly no bioligist so..... This happened at a number of area lakes all at the same time. This was the only explanation offered.
