i got a sample some time ago when someone posted a link to another website offering free samples. i was impress with the sample sent to me and decided that this year i would put it on one of my reels for bass fishing in the thick brush.

anyways, i really like this line. the sensitivity with it is second to none. you can feel every bump caused by vegitation or fish before they actually happen. there is little to no stretch in the line also. and it casts like a dream.

for those of you not familiar with it, it is a teflon coated braided superline. i got the 20lb test for my reel and it has the diameter of 6 lb mono.

the only problem i am having with the line is that i am getting alot of knots in it. i am not sure what is causing these knots to form, but i have stripped off a bit of line to get them out.

for the cost of the line, i dont mind the knots to much, hopefully i wont strip off much more line though.

a question for those that use this and other braided lines, do you get knots in your line?? i was just wondering if there was a way for me to avoid this problem.

thanks

Is your spool plastic or metal? My brother has a terrible time with knots on a plastic spool, but I use 6/20 spiderwire exclusively on all my shimanos(metal spool) and have never had a problem.

Cant explain what the difference is, but its all I use. Try changing spools.

when spiderline first came out, i got quite a few wind knots in the line. Don't know how to get rid of em.

i believe it is a metal spool. should be it is a shimano reel.

msu, i thought about wind knots, but cant really understand why. it makes sense in fly casting but not in spin casting.

i sorta think its because the original line was so limp (no memory or really stiffness at all), that when the lure hit the water the line would almost double upon itself if there were any twists or winds causing it to lay over itself. Then murphy's law would take over and it would somehow tie a stronger knot than I could ever come up with.

thinking about what you said about the line laying over itself makes sense. this line is really limp and i can see that happening. and yes the knot is stronger than anything that even a seasoned boy scout could tie!

thanks for the input steve.

I used Spiderwire for a couple of years right after it came out, but had some problems with knots, and with it getting brittle in pretty short time frame. I switched over to "fireline" which I think is a Berkley product, and I haven't looked back. Works very well for us. Granted it's been probably 8 years, and maybe spiderwire has been improved in that time. But the Fireline is worth trying also.

For what it's worth, I have never really liked using super braids for main line. They either knot or "bite" into themselves on the spool after snagging up or fighting a big fish. I've had these problems on both spinning reels and bait casters.

I've had better luck using them as leaders with a co-polymer mainline. Maybe its just me.

BTW, I got in on the same free spool deal, and as I recall it was Sparetime that gave us the heads up on that one. 75yds of Spider Wire Stealth 30lb free after filling out a quick questionaire. I'm still using that spool for musky leaders.

hey if you are having problems with Spider wire try checking out Spectra Power pro. I've had great success with it so far without any knots. I've had my share of problems with both Spiderwire and Fireline and I am liking the Spectra the best. Plus the Spectra is smaller diameter to line strength ratio and a little more affordable.

Love fireline for finesse aplications with a spinning outfit. I think you sacrifice casting distance, compared to premium quality mono. Only use braids for casting scumfrogs and other weedless baits in heavy cover. Neither briads nor fused lines like fireline are good for surface baits, IMHO.
