Anybody here have an opinion on this rod? I'm looking for a solid inexpensive spinning rod to throw in the truck and leave it. I have used the original ugly stick before, and I must say, they are/were less than impressive. I know they are pretty popular, just could never figure out why. They are durable, but thats about the only positive I can come up with. The newer Lites though have a much nicer feel and for $40, might be worth a try. I'm considering the 6'6" or 7' medium action.

Hmmm, an Ugly Stik that you can't chop wood with? I haven't seen them, but I might have to check one out.

I have the 6'6" medium action ugly stik lite. It's not a bad rod for the price. I've beat it up pretty good and it still works, and it's handled everything from bluegill to steelhead with no problem. I use it mainly river fishing with plugs, spinners and live bait. I have no complaints.

I love the lites. I have 4, 3 mediums and a an ultra light. I prefer the 7' medium. You cant beat the rod for the price, they are much more sensative than the regular Ugly Sticks, but still have the desired backbone and durability.

Trust James (Mallardtone-man), the only poles he will buy are Ugly Sticks.

Ugly stik lite is my favorite spinning rod. Had my first one for 5-6 years, would still have it except my son borrowed it and casted the top half of it into the lake while fishing with his nonfishing uncle. Went and bought a new one that same week. Im pretty rough on my gear and they hold up very well.

You should try a lite, they are sweet. You cant use em to chop wood, but you can slice a candle in half like with a samuri sword, and it wont fall over
 . Really, I love em, but as Mike (IFN) told me the other day, different strokes for different folks. :piparty:

And thats right Harsens Hunter, gotta represent the ugly stick! I even have a 15' heavy action that I use to surf fish for sharks. I feel the power in my hands with that baby, and I dont have to worry about breaking it when I cast a 12oz sinker and a 1lb live mullet a country mile.

I have always used ugly stiks and they have always performed good for me. I Bought a 5'10 lite a couple years ago and I like it just fine. I use it for worms or tubes or spinners. I also have 2 original uglies at 4'8 and 4' 10 both ultra lites and I love them too. My 4'8 ugly caught my biggest bass on the wall, 23 1/2" 5 3/4 # on a white beetle spin. I also have a 6'6 and a 7'0 that i use for bigger spinners and cranks. Ugly stiks "aint pretty" But they get the job done. The new lite sure are pretty though. I'm getting my wife a new one since she wants something a little newer.

I used an Ugly Lite 6' 1pc M casting rod for a few years, then I discovered the Whuppin' Sticks. Same thing as an Ugly Lite, but it costs $20.

I have a few 5'6" foot Ugly Stick Lites that I use for casting spinners and small cranks for trout. For the money they are tough to beat.... However they just don't have the feel I need for drifting that other higher end rods provide.

Plus the things are virtually indestructable.

I don't have the lites but I have 2 7' big water rods that I have abused for over 12 years now.
The get fished almost every day in the summer and fall.

Go with the the newest version of the U.S. Lite, the "Ugly Stik Lite Pro", the ones with the blue wrap background vs. the orange. Half the weight, twice the sensitivity, and still tough as nails. For the low money, can't be beat. I have four of the 7's and one 8'6". They rock. :)

Thanks for the replies!
I ended up buying a BPS Extreme XPS in 7' medium action and a BPS Bionic Blade XPS in 7' medium heavy. The xtreme was $59 (normally $99) and the Bionic Blade was $49 (normally $79). Combined they were only $30 more than a pair of the Lites and imo, are far superior rods, at least for how they'll be used. I was leaning more towards rods with a fast action anyway as I prefer these for bottom bouncing and tossing tubes in the river.
