i'm going to be in the UP next weekend around the Seney area and was looking for any help. first, i have no boat but am taking a kayak up and a canoe so are the good small lakes or rivers to fish? Second is there a place i can rent a boat for the bigger lakes..Manistique or indian? also are there any good trout areas around there? Any tips for the lakes as far as lure selection or which one would be appreciated too. sorry for all the questions but i've never fished up there before and want to have a good weekend. Ideally i would like to get into some pike with mabye a few walleye but i would settle for anything that will tighten my line. thanks.

hey mojo,
I've got a house on South manistique lake in the U.P. The fishing there has been very good in the past couple of years. The town of curtis is probably 20 mins away from seney. The fish and hunt shop in curtis has boat rentals, i know that for sure, they also have motor rentals if you need one. The best way to catch walleye this time of year would be to locate the edge of the weedbed, put the anchor out and cast out a slip bobber 'n minnow or leech. You also could jig with just a plain 3/8 oz jighead chartuese color with a minnow. Another good way to catch 'eyes are to find the main lake points which all have nice steep dropoffs especially long point and sprang point on the west side of the lake. You could drift right over them with a lindy rig and minnow or leech and get a couple of walleyes like that. And if you want pike theres plenty of hammer handles in the lake you could have some fun with. Just find the weeds and start trolling over them with any lure, crankbaits work best. 8-12 feet would be best depth to fish at for them. Well i hope this info helps. Good luck!

I agree that Nawakwa..north and a little east of Seney is a great lake for a canoe. It's got plenty of walleyes, pike, and perch. I'd recommend you forget Dutch Fred lake on the other side of M-77. It's posted as a trophy brook trout lake, but they are VERY scarce there, and the lake is jammed full of stunted 4" perch. If you are man enough to paddle UPSTREAM for an hour or so, you can launch at the M-28 bridge at the East Branch of the Fox River. Then you can fish on your way back. The river is loaded with brook trout. One more lake north of Seney on M-77 is Snyder lake. It's small and easy access. It's loaded with perch, and plenty are big enough to fillet. Alll of that being said, Nawakwa is my best advice. Gorgeous setting back in, and loaded with a varitey of what you want. Good luck with the skeeters(LOL).

thanks alot guys, i was supposed to go up there last fall but that fell through. i've been dying to get up there and this weekend is still a go. I think i'm going to ditch the kayak/canoe because we're only taking one car for 4 of us so we couldn't get everyone out in what we can take up, so renting it is. anyone know about how much they would run?
