Gills and crappie- Fish dropoffs with tiny maribou jig (white works best), no weight, and a waxworm. Allow the jig to sink and slowly retreive just above the weedline. The gills that have allready spawned are hanging out on the dropoffs just off of the spawning areas along with the Crappies.
Bass- Target the flats near drop offs with Jointed Rapalas (fire tiger in dark water) or small rattlin' husky jerks or throw plastics (slowly) on the drop offs.

depends on what lake you're on and the water temp I suppose, all the gills and crappies I caught around Clare the last two weekend were full of spawn. I think they were more "pre spawn", but lakes down in southern Michigan, I'd guess they are spawning or over with by now.

Bedded fish are way behind on most lakes around here. Bass should be moving up shallow, largies in shallow weeds, smallies on shallow sand/rock bottom. Try a tube, slowly bounce it off the bottom...sloowlly, works everytime.

1st pick would be a pumpkin or dark brown 1/8 ounce pig & jig with skirt using a small trailor.(i tie my own outta Rabbit strips for the claws, dubbing to match or use the Rabbit fur for the body, beadchain for the eyes and rubber legging for the antenna. i hit a local pond today and nailed 4 bucketmouths on it.Anything elese they were just following with no hits.
2nd. Senco fished wackey(hooked in the middle and fished sideways).Wartermellon/pumpkinseed always works.Don't buy the cheap ones as they don't sink or have the same action on the fall .Kinda tied with the 1st pick.
3rd. the good o'l tube in Pumpkin,Wartermellon,Smoke,Black&Purple,Mustard(A.K.A Baby S***)to name a few.No need to buy every color unless your like me and need every flake combo to boot :dizzy:
4th. pick would be dead sticking a suspending Rapala,Smithwick Rouge etc.
5th. running cranks tapping the bottom with a pause and retrieve.
Using the first or second pick will put them Bass onto the end of your rod for sure.

When they are spawning, you cant beat rubber salamanders over the beds. They hit them instinctively, and the pike love em too. I did pretty good on white, and pumpkin over the weekend. A bunch of big largemouths, and a 12lb pike as an added bonus.

James,
I had great luck last year on the salemanders, it was either YUM or ZOOM brand and I used the watermelon color I believe, green with flecks of black. They killed 'em even in the dead of summer. Last weekend hit 5 bass in about 10 minutes on a flat in 6 FOW that is normally weed choked in the summer on a jointed Firetiger Rapala.

Deputy,
Since you are shore bound, try this...1/16 oz. jig with a 2" plastic curly/twister tail. Try various colors and retrieves. Cast it out and swim it back, hop it back, or a combination of the two. You will catch just about whatever swims in there. It's a great panfish combination but you will also catch a few bonus bass especially in late spring & early summer. Plus, it won't cost you a fortune to buy a few of these rigs.
You can also try some small plastic tubes in various colors. Fish them on a jig head tied directly to the line or under a small bobber.
