I got home from Dallas Wed afternoon and called Sixshooter and Steve Arend to fish on Lake Michingan Thursday eve and as it turned out, Sixshooters partner for Thursday had a job interview and Steve was available. The plan was to hit the lake around 4pm and if the conditions on the lake changed, we would switch up and fish Walleye instead. Lake Michigan went south on us and we ended up in my local lake fishing for eyes. Was a great boat ride for the evening yet we lost a pike at the back of the boat, one trash fish was brought aboard and released as the season does not open till midnight tonight, and a bullhead was caught and released. Not a walleye in the bunch. We enjoyed the evening till 11:30 pm and called it a night. Lots of fun mind you, but not productive.
This morning was a little different. We got a 6:30 start on the same lake and started out pulling spinner rigs mayfly style and hot-n-tots all off the in-line boards. We were working points off a sunken island and took our first walleye on a red Hot-N-Tot about 1/2 hour in. It was a 28 1/2 about 6 lbs. It came in 40' of water about 20 down.
Hmmm.... decided to go look at the deep water and see we could find.
We found some suspended bait fish over 50-70 foot of water about 20 foot down and proceeded to work over the bait fish with suspending Rapulas in the clown, Husky Jerks in the same patterns and placed out a dipsey or 2 with the same style of baits. We ended up with another walleye, almost a twin to the first, on a clown Rapula, and a nice Northeren on a Husky Jerk in a clear minnow pattern off the dipsey. We released 2 other northerns and another 5 lb Bass all off the boards. We also lost a few fish. all of these fish were suspended over deep water, 50-70 foot of water chasing shad and alwives. The walleye were spitting up alwives when they came on board as was the bass. We ended up with the 2 walleye and the one northern for the box. Sixshooter took some photos and will post them up when he is able to get back on line.
Was a great time, had a lot of laughs and had the entire 1000 acre lake to ourselves. In the couse of the evening, and this morning, we feel we were able to solve most, if not all, of life's mysterys and issues. Thanks guys for the great time.
