for carp i use either crawlers or corn.

If the carp are rolling all over, they are spawning. Dosen't matter what you throw at them (except a spear) they don't want to bite.

Carp eat pretty much anything. If you use crawlers, pinch them in half and put the broken end right near the point of the hook. For some reason, they (and every other fish I've ever caught) will eat the crawler broken end first. Even when fishing with whole crawlers, I'll pinch off the very end to 'tell' the fish where to bite. :) Usually just still-fish for carp and you'll get em; they're a nuisance in Saginaw Bay.

Can't be much help with the gills though - I'm still trying to figure out how to catch them on a consistent basis.

You can catch carp when most are spawning, but from my experience they tend to be the smaller ones.

I like using corn that has been marinated in honey, ground cayenne, cinnamon, and ground anise. Corn from the can works on most days, but when the bite is slow, the seasonings help a lot. If I'm using corn straight from the can, alternating small pieces of night crawler can be deadly, and will increase your chances of a bonus cat fish.

As far as big 'gills go, its my understanding that it all depends on the ecology of the lake or pond you are fishing. Some places produce only stunted fish, while others give up good numbers of slabs. A rich and diverse food base and balance with predator species are two parts of the equation, IMO.

You fillet them just like you fillet any other fish. Being smaller, of course, means that you don't have as much room for error. The tricky part is getting over the curve of the ribs. Get yourself an electric knife and use it. My buddy Danno from the site is an expert at filleting perch. I've watched him and he is quick and effective using an electric fillet knife.

Keep at it, you'll get the hang of the technique after awhile.

As for carp bait, I use shreddd wheat made into doughballs. Sometimes I'll mix in a bit of peanut butter for flavor.

For carp,go to any pizza place and buy a pound of dough. We use to catch a ton when we were kids and trick is golf ball size of dough on a hook and no sinker and keep slack in the line and watch for them to run.

It was 20 years ago or longer when we fished for them at metro beach.I think it was a buck or so a pound or you can get it at any grocery store and mix your own.

There never was any tricks of carp fishing, just dough balls a hook (no sinker) and cast it out and let it lay on the bottom with some slack in your line and sit back and watch the line either tighten or slack up more. Good luck.

back in the day I used to stalk/sight-fish carp from shore, I found that they are not at all stupid, and I had to resort to a whole crawler on a single hook, hidden well....and toss it out in front of them, make it hit the water soft or they will spook. then you have to let them take it and not feel you on the other end for about 4 seconds until they get the hook in the lips. But this was sight fishing....a little different from what you are trying.

I have caught spawning carp in the creek by first chumming them with some wheat bread then catching them with doughballs or marshmellows. Funny thing though there were aroung a hundred 30 inch carp on average. I had at least 6 or 8 hookups in a short amount of time and landed 2 but the two I landed had my broken off hooks in their mouth. Which I guess means they dont eat a lot when they are spawning but you have to find the really hungry stupid ones!

Deputy, I sent ya another PM. And as a quick response to your chum question, it makes a huge difference for me. It gets them frezied sometimes when there in thick, and you catch fish that you normally would not have.

Deputy,

For those spawnig carp, I would recommend using a bobber. It's probably the best technique there is. Everything else seems to spook them. This will also help you to stay out of the weeds a little better. If the weeds are just too thick, try another spot. Toss the bobber out to where they are rolling. At first they will spook off. But after a few minutes of letting that bobber sit still, they'll come back and nail it. Try to get the bobber out there a good distance from either shore or from the boat. Stay low and don't move around.

During non spawning times of the year just cast a slip sinker rig out there with any of the earlier mentioned baits. Prop your rod up on shore with the ole' Y stick. Make sure to leave a little bow in the line. Tight lining will cause the fish to let go. I've sat there on many occasions and watch tight liners have carp tap their bait and immediately let go. Try to use the least amount of weight necessary to get a good cast and keep the bait from moving too much in any current. Set up two rods a good distance apart. Now just kick back between the two rods and watch the lines for a fish to pick it up.

Just keep practicing on filleting those fish and you'll get better. Start with a good quality sharp fillet knife. Make your first cut down to the backbone, but not through it, and then turn your blade and cut right along the backbone to the tail. My next step for filleting gills or other smaller fish (or any fish for that matter) is to use a fork in the other hand when cutting out the ribs and skinning. It holds everything there without slipping and it's a lot safer too. You can cut very close and lose very little meat. Try it. On larger fish I like to take out the vain after I've filleted it. Lie the fillet down inside side up. You'll see the vain that runs down the length of it in the middle. On the tail end, make two cuts about 1 inch on either side of the vain. Now grab the ends and pull. One half of the fillet will pull off right along the vain. On the other fillet, just pull the vain off and throw it out. This last step just takes a few seconds and is easy to do. After you pull out a few of those yucky veins, you'll always want your fillets this way.

My best technique for carp is to go to a shallow-backwater place. I use a thin-very sharp #6 hook, 6 lb test line on a light rod & reel. I take a 2" long piece of bread crust and hook it on so that the hook sticks out the side of the breadcrust. Put a bobber about 2 feet above the hook (you need the bobber so you can cast-it serves no other function). Cast out and let the crust float on top the water-then the fun starts! :tdo12: You will generally see the carp come up and check out the floating bread crust. Most times, they will surface and look it over and then turn away, but they will come back. Then, very quietly, they will come up to it and just suck it in. When they do, set the hook and hang on. The principle in the whole thing is that the carp do not "bite", they suck in the crust and then when they feel the hook, they spit it out but the real sharp, thin hook catches them right in the lip. I get about 50% good hookups. On the light tackle these fish are spectacular, last year my son Steve (6 yrs old) landed one of 17 lbs after a 25 minute fight.

As for bluegills-garden worms rule. As for filleting technique, I second the electric knife for perch, but not 'gills. The electric knife just doesn't deal well with the 'gills bone structure. For them I use my trusty 6" Rapala.
