Some of the locals here in East Tennessee are modifying buzzbaits effectively for catching largemouth.....if these lures were downsized, I think they would be great for smallies as well.

1. Take the skirt completely off a buzzbait....cut the nose off of a bush hog and use the hog as a trailer. Trimming the nose is necessary to get the hook to protrude out the rear portion of the bait correctly.

2. Take the skirt completely off a buzzbait and cut a zoom super fluke in half.
Thread the back half of the super fluke onto the buzzbait hook and use in that manner.

Now for smallies....I see Wal Mart carries a smaller buzzbait that would take the baby bush hogs and flukes cut in half (rather than the larger super flukes) for modifications. Should work well.

LittleMac - Don't worry about "downsizing" buzz baits for Smallys. 3/8 and 1/2 oz. are not too big for agressive Small Jaws - trust Me on this one ;) ! I fish lrg. buzzers on a local River and they work well. Good luck - Bob WC#253.

Thanks Bob, I appreciate knowing the larger ones work well. I was tinkering and found something since my last post, for even more action on the fluke body, weld on a replacement tail.....just weld on the hooktail from a zoom speedworm replacing the little "V" tail......

I also have found no problem using the larger buzzers for smallies. Nothing like a pack of dynamite blowing up on a buzzer :)

Smallies have guts. I have taken a lot of them on muskie sized topwaters. Somehow the fight just isn't the same on a 7'6' heavy action muskie rod spooled with 60# braid.......

Just thinking out loud, but am also thinking a 5 inch lizard may work for a trailer as well.......
