Can I get you guys to help us settle and arguement here at work this morning. When you take a kid out fishing with you do the fish he/she catches count against your limit or do they get their own limit.

This is true. Although my 10 year old son is not required to have a license to fish Canadian waters, I buy him one so he can catch his own limit. Otherwise, his fish count on my limit. Also, I agree in Michigan he can catch his own limit and does not require a license (under 16 I believe but don't quote me on the age part). :)

In Canada your kids catch counts as yours. We asked a CO last year while fishing.

I might be talking out my seat, but common sense tells me just because a kid doesnt have to have a license, doesnt mean he or she cant take a limit of fish. I would say, it is not part of your limit, they have their own limit!!!

I never asked an MNR officer but I assumed by me buying my son his own license, he could catch his own limit. Please let me know if this is not true but I can't imagine why that would not be legal.

Get the kids out there fishing, I think that is what it is there for. . .I think the DNR has it set up that if the kid wants to pay a $2.00 fee, they can. . . another great idea from the DNR.
One thing I was wondering and can't find on the DNR website. . . .can you help a small child reel in a fish? I would guess yes, but can't find it on the site.

Found this on the Ontario MDR web site in a "Take a kid fishing" brochure:
In Ontario, children below the age of 18 can
fish without a licence and take home a full limit of fish
if they wish. Adults between 18 and 64 are required to
have a licence.
Also have emaile the Michigan DNR to get a clarification on the law in Michigan.
The worst thing I can think of is to get some kind of ticket for over limit while teaching my sons the joy of fishing.

Gone Fishing, you didn't waste your money. The quote that Get_Outside pasted only applies to Ontario residents. Here's the quote for non-residents:
Non-residents under 18 years of age may fish without a licence
if accompanied by an adult who has a recreational fishing
licence. Any fish caught are part of the catch and possession
limit of the adult who holds the licence. As another option, nonresidents
under 18 years may purchase a licence and any fish
caught apply to the catch and possession limits of that licence.
You can see for yourself at: http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/pubs/fishing/fishRegs/2004/Info_fr2004.pdf

YEah, each person in the boat that has a canadian liscene in the boat= 1 limit. So, if you have 2 liscene's in the boat, say the lmit is 4 fish, you can keep only 8 fish no matter how many people are in the boat.
