As many of you may remember from last year, for the last 30 years I have spent a week in May chasing Steelhead in the U.P. with my father, brother, and now my sons ( Josh and Jake ). I just got back from 5 glorious days in Gods country fishing the small streams that have treated us so well over the years. They did not let us down this year. The fish were plentiful and cooperative. In my opinion, there is probably a couple more weeks of good fishing to be had. There was not much spawning activity yet and the rivers were full of males. The females that we caught or saw were chrome silver. Unlike down here, the weather was great with the only rain that we got being at night. The bugs were not too bad yet, but a good warm day and they will carry you away :yikes: . My son Jake had to come home early to compete in a couple of track meets for SVSU but he made the most of his time while he was there. It was wonderful to spend time on the streams and around the campfire at night, with my favorite fishing partners without the interuptions like the telephone or television or the many other "necessities" that keep us from truly TALKING to each other. I cherish this trip every year.....Patch

P.S. From the amount of boats that I saw going across US 2, I feel sorry for those Pike and Walleye this weekend  !

Here is Jake with his first of the trip

I was in the photo gallery earlier and saw a few of the pics knowing it was your annual trip. I stayed up half the night waiting for the post.

Nice report Patch. Looks like a great time and a wonderful location from the background.

It's great to enjoy the outdoors with family! Especially when the steels are biting!! Were you fly fishing? Just wondered. My family goes up for pike on memorial weekend close to copper harbor.

Thanks for the pix and the report. Some of those are larger than the typical Lake Superior steelie that we took out of the Two Hearted R.

What I like most about the picures isnt the fish ( they are very nice fish though). Its the color of the water in the background. Man I miss the UP. No mater how much time I get to spend up there its not enough. I have a 3 day trip in July with my father for brook trout planed. He is getting up there in years and this will be our first trout fishing trip ever in out lives together.
Im planning to take my 2 1/2 year old along one day in the backpack also. He should love that.
Great familly tradition and very nice fish.

Maxemus: Yes, we were fly fishing. Egg patterns worked well, but we had our best luck on an egg-sucking leach in purple.

Brandon: I agree, I can't get enough time up there either! I'll be up there again in July or August chasing Brookies with my father too.

The black flies are just starting to get thick. The skeeters will be next so bring a lot of bug repellent.

Yep, same on the west end. Saw a few people slapping themselves real bad and waving their hat around. Musta been flat landers from Chicago. :yikes:  :D
