Are there many dogfish/gar in there? I couldnt make any out in the pic. What do you do w/ all the fish?

Yes there are dogfish, red carp & gars mixed in.
We always see alot of gar in this shoot, but most people pass them up,because there is not alot of weight to them. About the time you shoot one, a big ole carp will swim by-been there done that :bash:

What Timj said

Many of the fish are used for fertilizer and the others are burried.

Im 17, ive never entered the tournament, but I go to the weigh in ever year. It is unbelievable how many fish and brought in. It just garbage can after garbage can after garbage can of Carp, Garpike, Dogfish, and the occasional Goldfish. I shoot carp a lot but never entered the tournament.

I think it's odd that year after year tons and tons of these "rough fish" are slaughtered during their spawn and it never seems to diminish the population. Why is that?

timj

It is because many, many more tons of these "rough fish" survive and spawn every year.
Other than a few bowfisherman very few are harvested, compared to panfish & other gamefish.

The real question is what would happen if they didnt do it for a few years:tdo12:

Participated in the Great Lakes Bowfishing Championship in Caseville, MI. this weekend. Went up with my son Dan, 2 of his buddies Aaron & Jem, and 2 of my buddies Vic & Dan. Saw some BAM guys and lots of other friends. The Easterbrook family along with some volunteers does an awesome job with this tournament. 250 teams handled, weighed, and taken care of all weekend and from outside looking in, it looks like everything was running smoothly but I am sure they dealt with many mini & major crisis's all weekend. Hard to thank these folks enough.
The weather was great on Saturday clear skies sunny and cool however it was a little cool for the spawn to start and the bright sun made the fish skittish and hard to approach. But we saw & shot lots of shots at lots of small gar and a few carp but we came down with a bad case of CHS Disease (Can't Hit S*it) so my partner Aaron & I only ended up with 33 lbs for Saturday. We even made a 1/2 hour run out to the islands to try and find some easier fish to shoot, at least the pontoon boat ran like a top. Dan & Jem shot 98 lbs. Saturday and Vic & Dan missed Saturdays shoot but met us for their victory dinner Saturday night because they shot the most last year.

Sunday was warmer but a little mist, lots of clouds and occasionally the sun would break through. When the sun broke thru the fish would start to spawn and you could see in the water. So we got into water and waded around with stringers shooting at carp. Even with more CHS Disease we managed to shoot 171 lbs and Dan & Jem shot another 179 lbs. Ran into Harsens Hunter from the MichiganSportsmen forum checking out the weighin but it was crowded and we were hot, smelly, and in the way so we just weighed in and got out of there and headed for home.

Looking forward to getting the newsletter from the GLBC folks with all the results of the shoot and how everyone we know did at the shoot. It was a real fun shoot this year. Anybody else go? How did you do? Hear any final results?

Nice seeing you there Don.....I had to leave early Sunday morning after take-off, but as far as I know everything went pretty smoothly. Over twenty years of doing this, we have worked out most of the kinks. We were also fortunate to buy the scales at a steal, instead of renting. This will save our cost in a big way for future tournaments. I'll post when the follow-up newsletter is ready to go for those who want a copy.

For those who don't know this tournament is a fund raiser for the kids camp my family runs in Caseville, that provides outdoor education to thousands of kids a year.

Went up to the weigh in on Sunday and a guy from "Team Muzzy" shot a 13.97 Gold Carp. I've never seen one of those before. I had the color like a gold fish, but was a carp, and it had some big black eyes. It smashed the previous tournament record of 8 pounds. Also seen a lot of 2 pound Goldfish brought in. Don't know who won, but Team SilverDollarBowfishing brought in over 2100 pounds on Saturday, so my guess would be that they won.

I met Ddolph and his partner Aaron. Too bad they had a bad case of the CHS Disease. LOL

looking for local lakes to bowfish at night, need to be able to launch a pontoon boat and be able to use the launch from like 8 pm until 1-2 am to take the boat back out, willing to pay to launch at a private launch. Also happy to have 1-2 guys come along if they know some good spots they would like to share. Would like it to be within an hour or so of Novi. Any help would be appreciated !!

Hey Ron,

Thanks for your continued support, as you know there has been many changes in the last year. Although the camp will no longer be under our guidance my hopes is the tournament will go on to provide funds for another great cause.

Awesome :D My buddy & I are team#26, 17 plus years. Believe it or not this will be the first year I miss :( , my teammates son is getting married, I tried to get them to change the date but they have no sense of priorities   .

I told my teammate my son (team#36,10 plus years) would never get married on the first weekend in June but he just hangs his head in shame and says he has no control :bash:
